Route overview
An amazing journey from the early human Homo heidelbergensis at the Schöningen Research Museum (paläon) to the more recent history of the region awaits you. The paläon route is the southernmost of three cycle routes around the renatured opencast mines in the Helmstedt mining district.
It leads through the town of Schöningen with its many sights, the Wulfersdorf Switzerland, and to the former inner-German border.

Route description
The start and end point of this route is at the Schöningen Research Museum (paläon). This route is a circular route, so it can alternatively be started and ended at any other location described along the route.
From the Schöningen Research Museum (paläon) (stamp point 15), the route leads directly into the center of Schöningen with its many sights. (Please push your bike in the pedestrian zone). One of these is the local history museum. It was founded in 1927 and has been located since 1957 in the patrician house directly on the market square. This is also the location of the history fountain, old town hall, and Water Maiden, the landmark of Schöningen. The sculpture commemorates the time when the hardest water in Germany flowed in Schöningen.
At Burgplatz are Schöningen Castle (stamp point 16) and the former gatehouses of the castle with the tourist information and changing exhibitions.
The route continues through the castle courtyard to the castle meadow and through the public park. Shortly after reaching the city outskirts, a roadside cycle path leads to Büddenstedt. The church tower of Büddenstedt can already be seen from afar, and after passing through the town, you reach the renatured Wulfersdorf opencast mine via an avenue.
The entrance to the former opencast mine over a narrow bridge is challenging. However, the further path leads in a relaxed manner through a renatured and natural, picturesque landscape, the so-called Wulfersdorf Switzerland.
The route leads via Hohnsleben and Reinsdorf to Offleben, where the border hiking trail is located directly on the former inner-German border.
After crossing the former border strip, it continues past the Viktoriasee to Hötensleben with the Hötensleben border monument.
The decades-long division of Germany can still be vividly experienced here.
The final destination of the route is the opencast mine information point in Schöningen, where locomotives, coal wagons, and a bucket-wheel excavator explain the technology of coal mining.
The starting point of the route at the Schöningen Research Museum (paläon) is already within sight from here.
