Sessenheim, a small French community located about 40 km north of Strasbourg, became famous through Goethe and his love for the Sessenheim pastor's daughter Friederike Brion. In 1770, Goethe fell in love with the 19-year-old girl and often stayed in Sessenheim to spend time with Friederike. Today, Sessenheim is a popular pilgrimage site for many Goethe admirers. The current rectory houses a small museum displaying some memorabilia related to Friederike and her father. In honor of this epoch-defining poet, a street and a hill in Sessenheim are named after him.
There is a road barrier between the Drusenheim Rhine ferry landing and Offendorf, but cyclists are permitted to pass. (Updated March 2022)

Directions:
The starting point of the route is at the train station in Herrlisheim. From the station, follow Rue de la Gare to Rue d’Offendorf, where you will meet the Rhine Cycle Route. From there, you cycle through Drusenheim and Dalhunden to Sessenheim. At the roundabout just before Sessenheim, the Rhine Cycle Route turns right. Here, continue straight on D 727 into the center of Sessenheim. In Sessenheim, you have the opportunity to visit the small Goethe Museum in the rectory.
To continue the ride, take Rue Goethe (D 137), pass the Goethe hill to Stattmatten, which you reach via the Route du Rhin. At the Mairie (town hall) in Stadtmatten, turn right onto Rue Principale, cross the Moder river at the end of the street, and take a small road towards the Rhine. Just before the Rhine dike, you pass through the gravel works area and then turn right onto the old Rhine Cycle Route. The road, closed to motor vehicles, leads past the Drusenheim ferry landing always below the Rhine dike until shortly before Offendorf. Where the paved road ends at an intersection, turn right to Offendorf. In the center of Offendorf (in front of the church), you will rejoin the new Rhine Cycle Route. Follow it back to the starting point in Herrlisheim.
