Neither water nor solid land: On this route you will get to know many facets of the moor landscapes.
From the Oil and Gas Museum in Twist you cycle towards the Dutch border – and follow its course along the Bargerveen nature reserve. Over the almost black water of the moor lakes you can observe shimmering dragonflies, discover the small sundew plant that catches insects, and overlook the species-rich bird world from the observation tower. And with a bit of luck, you might spot the rare short-eared owl, which hunts during daylight, or the nightjar, a swallow species active at night and dusk.
Further nature reserves lie along your path: for example the Fullener Forest with its adventure trails. You also pass through the Emsland metropolis Meppen. At the very least, you should stop here for a break at the old market square with a view of the historic town hall.
You now follow the wide course of the Ems to Groß-Hesepe and to the Emsland Moormuseum, which makes the history of the region tangible: from the arduous life of the first peat colonists, through the transformation of natural land into arable fields with the world’s largest steam plough, to today’s protection of the unique habitats.
