The perfect route for beginners and advanced cyclists. Explore the sea, the harbor, the breathtaking nature, and follow in the footsteps of Christianization. Pause at places of silence and enjoy a moment of tranquility.
The Mönchsweg route largely follows the historic and namesake long-distance cycle route Mönchsweg. It invites you to discover the traces of Christianization around Neustadt in Holstein. Right at the start, you pass through a wonderful nature reserve where you can explore great nature and significant biodiversity. Shortly thereafter, your eyes fall on the three-aisled basilica. This is, of course, not a ship but a church in the Brick Gothic style in Altenkrempe. World music and sacred events take place here. Let yourself be enchanted by the unmistakable acoustics of the basilica and listen to the unique sounds of the music. Passing meadows, forests, and small sweet houses, there is always something new to discover. The numerous thatched-roof houses easily allow you to imagine being in another time. Shortly before Rettin, on a small hill, the wide horizon stretches out with the waves of the Baltic Sea and rolling fields. Further on the Mönchsweg tour, you also reach the beach directly on the pier of Rettin. From here, the route leads you on via Pelzerhaken, along the Cap Arkona memorial, the BUND environmental house, and the Neustadt art kilometer back to Neustadt in Holstein.

The route runs mostly on paved paths and quiet side roads, with some kilometers on unpaved field paths. The unpaved paths are well rideable. The signage is good. This route includes some short climbs. The route can be ridden with any bike, but a gear shift is advantageous.Roadbook
The starting point is the Tourist Information Neustadt Stadthafen. The first section takes you along the historic Mönchsweg past the inland water and the nature reserve immediately adjacent to the town. For the sake of the local wildlife, the route then moves slightly away from the water towards Altenkrempe along a cycle path. Soon the three-aisled basilica in the Brick Gothic style comes into view, which lends its excellent acoustics to both sacred and secular music concerts. To the right in front of the basilica, follow the path. Meadows on both sides, a bridge over the A1, and you arrive in Logeberg. Follow the Kirchweg to the end, then you meet the district road (Neustädter Straße). Carefully cross the district road, cycle left, and then immediately turn right towards "Schashagen." Here a quiet road takes you through nature and finally into a dreamy small forest. At the T-junction, turn right, passing a few houses under trees. Upon reaching Schashagen, simply turn right twice. At the red half-timbered house with blue gates and "1926" in the gable, you leave the town. Continue on to Beusloe, which is no longer on the Mönchsweg and is dedicated to golf. At the T-junction, go straight and shortly after turn left onto a narrow path that ends in a small industrial area. In the industrial area, turn right until you reach the district road, where you turn left. After the underpass, continue straight ahead to Brodau. There, you can make a stop at the Brodau estate. Now you leave the historic Mönchsweg and head back to Neustadt in Holstein. After passing the Brodau estate, keep right once so you now approach the Baltic Sea and Rettin again. At the main intersection, turn left once more and you reach the promenade. The pier lies directly in front of you. Then follow the dunes only. 200 meters behind the surf school, turn right into a small street that leads you through Pelzerhaken. At the fork behind the supermarket, keep left, then after a few meters a cycle path begins. At the height of the DANA senior residence, a path immediately turns left at the underpass towards the Baltic Sea, offering an unobstructed panoramic view. Now you head to the Cap Arcona memorial cemetery, where you must dismount your bike. The last stage also runs along the water; the Ostseelounge and beach bath come into view, and you pass the BUND environmental house. Then take the cycle path that runs above the promenade to the harbor, back to the Tourist Information Neustadt Stadthafen.
