Bike route through the region popularly called Ostarrichi a thousand years ago.

A report in the Bezirksblätter once again reminded me of the Zauchbach.
That the Ybbs around Amstetten is unquestionably the number one water body is undisputed.
    But what comes next?
The Danube? Sure, but that's much further away.
The next waters you should think of when coming from Amstetten, Ulmerfeld-Hausmening, Mauer, St. Georgen, Ferschnitz, Euratsfeld or Neuhofen are the Url and the Zauchbach.

    What did I read there?
There used to be 17 mills on the banks of the Zauchbach ....
And then I saw the beautiful watercolor of the Hauslaumühle by Ferdinand Viertlmayer, which I used as the cover picture for my Ostarrichi bike route.

I have also paddled the Mostviertler Zauchbach from Kröllendorf to its mouth by kayak (then there was snow water).
And then in December 2019, I read in the Bezirksblätter:
Nature as teacher: Students are supposed to "immerse" in Doislau and Zauchbach.

I doubt that the people pictured in image 2 from the Bezirksblätter are the right ones for nature at the Zauchbach here.
There are quite a few who are loyal supporters of the multifunctionaries

    • Deputy Governor of Lower Austria, ÖVP member Dr. Stephan Pernkopf, responsible as state councilor for environment, energy, etc. - for me incompatible areas, and
    • Member of Parliament Michaela Hinterholzer

for the state of Lower Austria and the EVN against all nature conservation interests advocate for the construction of a power plant by the Hohe Brücke (2.5 km downstream of the Zauchbach mouth).

Now it was clear, I have to visit the Zauchbach again, I will include it in my next cycling round tour.

    Safety information

For example, between Lisbon and Porto the infrastructure is not yet well developed. The stages from one accommodation to the next can accordingly be long and adventurous.

    Tips and suggestions

Interesting churches on the bike route:

Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary – Neuhofen a.d. Ybbs

The town of Neuhofen was first mentioned in the so-called "Ostarrichi" document of November 1, 996 as "Niuvanhova".
Archaeological excavations uncovered foundations of a relatively large Romanesque church, which was extended by a Gothic choir around 1400.
In the second half of the 15th century, the Romanesque structure was replaced by a late Gothic one and received its current appearance around 1480/90.

The mountain church in St. Veit

The founding legend says that three noble brothers each endowed a church, namely St. Veit, St. Leonhard am Walde, and St. Thomas am Blasenstein.
The locations of these churches were chosen so that they had visual contact with each other.
Indeed, the three churches are each located at moderate heights, and on clear days one can see the other two from each church.
It is documented that pilgrims already donated chickens in the 15th century.
Vitus is the patron saint of small animals.
A "chicken coop" at the back of the high altar still recalls the early tradition of chicken offerings.

    The filial church in Wallmersdorf

is a late Gothic building with a gable roof dedicated to St. Sebastian.

    Roadbook

    Partial km/Total km. . . . . . . . . . D e s c r i p t i o n . . . . . ..

0.0/0.0   Start at the train station in Amstetten.

0.9/0.9   We cycle parallel to the railway in the "Graben" westwards.
After 300 m first roundabout, we cycle straight ahead, after another 100 m second roundabout, we take the third exit, go under the railway, and cycle straight ahead on Laurenz-Dorrer-Straße to the traffic light at the first cross street (there is a bike path on the left side of the street).

1.8/2.7  We cross Stadionstraße at the traffic light.
In front of us is the natural swimming pool.
For cyclists coming by car, there is a large parking lot here, they start here.
We cycle 200 m eastwards on the right edge of the road.
Before the Pölz Hall, we turn right into Stadthallenstraße.
Now straight ahead for 250 m, then underpass of the B 1 and on the Ybbs footbridge over the Ybbs. Then turn left and cycle about 1 km on Grillparzerstraße to a small roundabout.

2.3/5.0  We turn right, cross a cross street at a chapel after about 500 meters and cycle further first southwest, then south and cross L 90 in Franzhausen (road to Euratsfeld).
Now uphill to the right to Haag and straight ahead to the intersection at the Ostarrichi barracks.

2.3/7.3  Straight ahead, we leave the barracks on the left.
Shortly through a forest, then slightly downhill, past Landtechnik Paumann and shortly thereafter we are in the Zauchbach plain.
Past the Wagner sawmill (= former Haidenlach mill), then we come to L 89 and can take a first look at the Zauchbach.
That is a "puny" little stream!

1.8/9.1  On L 89 we turn right, after 1.3 km in Schindau (before going uphill) we turn left towards Neuhofen.
After another 0.5 km a bridge over the Zauchbach (which now is really the Zauchbach - the water at km 7.3 came from the Elzbach, the stream that flows through Neuhofen).
The Zauchbach is now dry, as dry as a stream can be.
I think about how the students are supposed to "immerse" in the Zauchbach here!
    Poor students!

2.4/11.5  When the dry shock is over, we continue cycling, pass through Perbersdorf, turn left at the square of the forgotten peoples and reach Neuhofen (church and Ostarrichi museum!).

Before Neuhofen, I took a short detour to the right towards Hömbach.
I wanted to look into the Zauchbach - naturally dry here as well, no water!

3.5/15.0  We cycle straight ahead through Neuhofen, at the town's end keeping left (= L 6123), following the course of the Elzbach, to Ungförten.

1.8/16.8  In Ungförten a climb begins, after 60 meters of elevation the highest point is reached, and on the other side it descends 60 meters down to Hiesbach.

Picture 33 (map): Between Neuhofen and Hiesbach there is a beautiful, rewarding variant. It's even shorter, but 50 meters more elevation must be managed.
To do this, drive up to the right at the end of Neuhofen (before crossing the Elzbach) to Haagberg, then continue through the Kucket forest to the farmhouses of Hirschöd.
Between the two farmhouses a road goes down to the left and you end up at the highest point of the flatter variant.
If you are already in Hirschöd, you should continue on the ridge to St. Veit (interesting church and wonderful view!).

4.3/21.1  In Hiesbach we cross the Zauchbach again, we are now already near its source (about 4.5 km at St. Leonhard).
And behold, here it has water - not much though, after this low-snow winter, but at least some.
We cycle downstream on L 92 along the Zauchbach.
A road from St. Veit flows in from the right, we pass through a small forest.
And then we see on the right side some fountains of the Ybbstal fruit processing plant, which probably cause the water to end up in the fruit juices, but not in the lower course of the stream.
Fitting saying: To "dig away" the neighbor's water.
Adapted: To take away the water from the lower course!
Just before Kröllendorf we turn right.
We cross the Zauchbach again (on the left we see another fountain), ride up to Ried and continue to Scherbling.

3.7/24.8  In Scherbling the Mostbaron bike route goes right (to Neuhofen), we go left (or straight ahead) through the valley basin, crossing the Zauchbach for the last time.

Here I have to stop again and take some pictures. The waterless Zauchbach!

Then back on the bike and briefly uphill to Wallmersdorf.
In Wallmersdorf turn right and on L 92 to Ulmerfeld.

In Wallmersdorf you can also briefly turn left, right after a guesthouse cycle out into the fields where you meet the Ybbstal bike path, on which you can also cycle the remaining distance to Amstetten.

3.0/27.8  In Ulmerfeld straight ahead - L 92 becomes L 6125, which we follow to Winklarn.

2.0/29.8  In Winklarn, 150 m after the church, we turn left into Kindergartenstraße.
We reach the bank of the Ybbs, cycle straight ahead until we can cross the power plant canal and then the Ybbs at a bridge.
In Greinsfurth we meet the Ybbstal bike path.

3.4/33.2  Immediately after crossing the Ybbs we turn sharply right, cross the Url and cycle on Schwarzen Weg to Amstetten.
We stay on the right side of the railway.
Through Jahnstraße we reach the center, cross Ybbsstraße at the Stadtwerkhaus.
At the next street (Laurenz-Dorrerstraße) we turn left, go under the railway and turn right to the station.
