Route overview
In the Middle Ages, the Lappwald was the border area between the Duchy of Braunschweig and the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. The old border protection system "Landwehr" with three watchtowers is still largely preserved. It is a testimony to turbulent times when people tried to protect themselves from foreign armies, robber knights, and all sorts of riffraff. The medieval circular route leads through the Lappwald past several medieval sights. Information boards explain the history.

Route description
The start and end point of this route is at the Magdeburger Warte, located directly on the B1 east of Helmstedt. This is a circular route, so the route can alternatively be started and ended at any other place described along the path.
The Magdeburger Warte is situated at the edge of the Lappwald, directly on the B 1 between Helmstedt and Morsleben. Before starting the bike ride, the old watchtower should be climbed. The ascent is rewarded with a magnificent view over Helmstedt extending to the Elm. In clear weather, the visibility to the southeast even reaches as far as the Harz with its highest peak, the Brocken at 1,141 meters.
The information board here provides details about the Helmstedter Landwehr, a border fortification constructed in the Middle Ages. In addition to the Magdeburger Warte, the 1st Walbecker Warte and the 2nd Walbecker Warte are relics of this former border fortification.
Now the actual route starts heading north towards the next information board at the 1st Walbecker Warte (stamp point 17). After a short stop at the former watchtower, you continue at a steady pace to the 2nd Walbecker Warte.
Next, the route crosses the state border into Saxony-Anhalt. The path then follows the former DDR border troops' patrol road for about 1.5 km towards Bad Helmstedt. Caution is needed here, as it is not easy to keep your line on the slab road. Careful cyclists dismount and enjoy the nature.
Upon arriving at Brunnental, you pass by the Brunnentheater to take a short break at the Berliner Bär and enjoy the view of the ponds.
After a detour to the Burgberg ruin (stamp point 18), the route heads back. Passing the well-preserved Wölbäcker fields, located near the path, the last stop on the route is the old duel site of the Helmstedt students. The name of the place, "Adam and Eve," refers to two hornbeam trees planted here around the year 1500.
Now, returning to the starting point of the route is just a "stone's throw" away.
