The Meuse Route is the southern section of LF3. Between the hills south of Nijmegen and the rolling hills of Limburg, you follow the meandering course of the Meuse River. You’ll cycle through the famous Maasheggen landscape, with its patchwork of small plots shielded by hawthorn and buckthorn hedges. Thanks to the many ferry crossings along the route, you can experience the atmosphere on both sides of the Meuse. On the slopes of the Limburg Meuse Valley, you’ll pass through a landscape that feels “un-Dutch”—with abandoned cart tracks, field crosses, vineyards, marl caves, and fairy-tale-like half-timbered cottages. You can also combine the route with numerous day trips to, for example, Burgers Zoo in Arnhem, the castle ruins in Kessel, Thermae 2000 in Valkenburg, the Gulpener brewery, the tri-border area in Vaals, and various museums.
The LF3 Meuse Route connects to the LF12 Meuse and Fortress Route at Cuijk. This route follows the lowland section of the Meuse, passing old forts and fortifications. Together, the two routes cover the entire course of the Meuse in the Netherlands.
TIP
Cycling and boating? It’s possible with the bicycle ferry in the North Limburg, Brabant, and Gelderland regions. The bike shuttle boat has 7 stops on both sides of the Meuse for boarding and disembarking: Boxmeer, Gennep, Oeffelt, Cuijk, Mook, Overasselt, and Grave. Click here for more information.
Current information and route changes
Before you set out on an LF route, always check to see if there are any current issues along your route that could affect your trip. There may be a temporary road detour or a ferry out of service. In any case, the LF route network has changed significantly in recent years due to the coordination of LF routes with regional cycling junction networks.
