The beginning from Larvik to Skien is not particularly pretty but is characterized by a road construction peculiarity: after Langangen the mountain road loops around itself!
On the ridge through the Paradise Suburbia Skien there are some pretty views. The section to Sauland is interesting, offering a nice mix of asphalt and gravel.
The passage over the Lifjell with the one-hour push/carry section on the south shore of the Gavlesja can be compared to a carry section on a classic alpine crossing. If you don't find that appealing, you can just ride around the Lifjell.
The section past Gaustatoppen offers the first real long-distance views, and the campsite at Sandviken is a nice place to relax before the climb through the Tessungdalen.
From Uvdal you should definitely ride the ideal gravel trail through the Smadoldalen; in the Alps there are hardly any similarly pristine valleys.

From Geilo you can continue via Gol and the Mjölkevegen to Vinstra on the National Cycle Route 5/2.
For the return trip from Geilo to Larvik I chose the National Cycle Route No. 5/1 through the Numesdal.

The turnoff to Skien into the Rokkedalen is very steep and gravelly for only 100m down to under the railway line and then rideable without problems.
The crossing of the Lifjell on the south shore of the Gavlesja means about an hour of pushing and carrying. The really blocked passage is only about a quarter of an hour long.
The climb through the Tuddalsdalen rises about 300 Hm with a double-digit percent gradient towards Tuddal. Before and after, the 1,200 Hm up to below the Gaustatoppen can be pedaled without problems.
The climb through the Tessungdalen is a very beautiful mountain road over 1000 Hm.
