Tips and suggestions
Literature and further information about the history of the region around Heideck are regularly available at the local history collection in the Heideck town hall. It is open from March to October on Sundays and public holidays from 2 to 4 pm. Guided tours for groups available by appointment.
Especially the village of Laibstadt has a rich history. This can be explored on the seven-kilometer-long Laibstadt History Trail.
There is a viewpoint directly on the Schloßberg. On clear days, you can enjoy views as far as Nuremberg. A four-kilometer-long circular hiking trail leads around the Schloßberg. So get off your bike briefly and set out on a small discovery walk. More information at the City of Heideck, 09177 49400, www.heideck.de.
The Archaeological Museum Fundreich Thalmässing, located at the Thalmässing marketplace, invites you to explore history hands-on: The modern museum presents the prehistoric and early historic settlement of the region largely through "interactive elements." Highlights of the exhibition include a Celtic cattle trailer and a 4,000-year-old squat grave. An annual guided tour and event program for the archaeological museum and archaeological hiking trail offers numerous suggestions throughout the year. All information at www.fundreich-thalmaessing.de.
The Celtic rampart near Ohlangen measures 150 x 100 meters and dates from around 150 – 50 BC. It is one of the last remnants of the region. According to recent findings, it is a farm or a small settlement. In spring, you can pick culinary treats here: wild garlic grows abundantly in the forest where the Celtic rampart is located.
Roadbook
Along the ALLEESTRASSE, the MAIN STREET takes us left to the roundabout with the large ostrich. Here, we turn north into LAFFENAUER STREET. After 400 m, we cycle right over SCHOOL STREET to the district of SEIBOLDSMÜHLE.
Here, we turn right onto the track of the former railway line, the GREDL CYCLE PATH. The section from SEIBOLDSMÜHLE to the EUROPEAN WATERSHED is especially scenic. At the top, an ARTWORK marks the course of the European MAIN WATERSHED; the panoramic view is impressive.
Immediately after, a well-drivable field path branches off to the left towards STAUF. Parts of the once sturdy castle still remain and are inhabited. From here to SCHWIMBACH, enjoy the panoramic view of THALMÄSSING with the Jura ascent behind it. Particularly worth seeing in SCHWIMBACH is the St. Lorenz Church with its late Gothic high altar.
From SCHWIMBACH, the local signage leads onto the lightly trafficked road to AUE and on to the CYCLING PATH ROTHSEE–ALTMÜHLTAL. Here, we turn right to the marketplace in THALMÄSSING, where a visit to the Archaeological Museum FUNDREICH THALMÄSSING with spectacular regional finds is worthwhile. Now we take the MAIN STREET westwards: Just before leaving the town, turn right towards OHLANGEN to climb the challenging hill.
Passing the impressive Celtic rampart, we cycle through OHLANGEN to RABENREUTH, then left, 800 m before KIPPENWANG left again, after a further 1.6 kilometers right onto the road to LAIBSTADT. At the main junction in LAIBSTADT, turn left and after 150 m right again towards SCHLOSSBERG (the former seat of the Lords of Heideck). Shortly before the village, turn left onto the district road, then immediately right to RAMBACH. This path leads us back to the starting point in HEIDECK.
