The name Uffried dates back to the 15th century and means the upper (Uff) reed meadow. The area extends east to the Rhine, north to the Sauer, west to the Haguenau Forest, and south to the Moder. Uffried was a former municipal association founded in 1992. It included 9 places: Auenheim, Forstfeld, Fort-Louis, Kauffenheim, Leutenheim, Neuhaeusel, Roeschwoog (administrative center), Roppenheim, and Rountzenheim. As of January 1, 2014, the municipal association Uffried merged with neighboring associations to form the new Communauté de communes du Pays Rhénan. In the Middle Ages, Uffried was a fiefdom of the Counts of Fleckenstein. Until the French Revolution, Roppenheim was the administrative seat of the estates. In 1543, the town became predominantly Protestant. In the early 18th century, Uffried came under the rule of the Princes of Rohan and thus belonged to the sphere of influence of the French kings.
