The hilly landscape of the Duchy of Lauenburg with its lakes, moors, and alder copses was shaped by the Vistula Ice Age about 20,000 years ago. By bike, you embark on an approximately 39 km long ice age journey.
You leave the island town of Ratzeburg and follow the west bank of Lake Ratzeburg. The almost 10 km long lake lies in a glacial meltwater channel that filled with the water of the melting glaciers.
Route course
Ratzeburg is the start and end point of the approximately 39 km long circular route. Via Groß Disnack, you reach Bartelsbusch, a ground moraine landscape with high soil quality and an impressive forest that benefits from it. Your path then leads you to Berkenthin and the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. When you leave the canal cycle path at Donnerschleuse, the terminal moraine ridges around Lankau and Albsfelde demand some more effort. However, you can refresh yourself along the way in cozy farm cafés and country inns, and a dip in the cool water of the Ratzeburg or Lankau Lakes provides refreshment.
