Classic solitary circular route from Krün to Lake Walchen, up to Altlacher Hochkopf to the Hochkopfhütte, a hunting lodge of King Ludwig II. The hut is not serviced, but offers a magnificent view with a short circular path. Return via various raised bogs, past Markkopf through Filzmoos to Wallgau and along the wild river Isar back to Krün.

    Safety information

    Mountain Rescue Tips:

    Preparation for the route:

    - Equipment adapted to difficulty, weather, and season

    - Equipment for the unexpected: headlamp, rain jacket, first aid kit, mobile phone

    Inform others about your route:

    - Routes in pairs are more enjoyable and safer

    - Inform the reception what you plan and when you expect to return

    - In emergency, summit or hut book entries or chatting with hut hosts can save lives (mobile networks are not always reliable in the mountains!)

    In case of emergency:

    - Keep calm, dial emergency number: 112

    - Where? Make sure where you are and activate your location services and mobile data!

    - What? When? Which injury? How many?

    - If you have mobile network, do not change your location!

    - Provide first aid

    Roadbook

First towards Wallgau in the direction of Lake Walchen. At the town’s end, take the bike path to Einsiedel. There turn right onto the toll road towards Jachenau and follow it until a forest road branches off to the right. However, do not take the first forest road but the second one. The yellow signpost points to Altlacher Hochkopf. Now follow the wide, gently ascending forest road. After a few minutes at a fork in the road,  the footpath branches off, but you stay on the forest road. In the maze of many branching paths and forest roads, strictly follow the signs that show the way to Hochkopf. After you have gained most of the altitude, another forest road branches off to the right; follow this until the turnoff to the hut leads  about one hundred fifty meters to the left into the forest. A sign does point the way, but tree branches often hide it in the protective thicket. You now enter a clearly narrower and rougher cart path. Initially crossed by water channels, coarse gravel, and roots,  the path quickly turns into a flat and narrow footpath after just a few hundred meters, which accompanies you the last stretch to the hut. You have now reached Hochkopfhütte (1299m) (not serviced).  From here, you have a magnificent view towards Wallgau and the rugged rock formations of Schöttelkarspitze, Soiernspitze, and Krapfenkarspitze. On the way back, you ride south of Markkopf. At a fork, do not take the road but follow the path 100m to the left, then back on a wide road to the toll road. Cross it to the left, briefly descend into the Isar valley, and return along the Isar back to Krün.
