Cambomare – Wirlings – Rohr – Hellengerst – Weitnau – Sibratshofen – Missen – Diepolz – Niedersonthofen – Rohr – Wirlings – Cambomare
You start your route at the Cambomare leisure pool on Aybühlweg, cycle southwards on Aybühlweg and then turn right onto the bike path running parallel to Lindauer Straße. Along the way, you pass the Kempten city pond on your left. After Rothkreuz, turn left towards Albris/Wirlings.
In Wirlings, cross the main street at the church and continue straight ahead towards Walkarts. On a winding route, it goes downhill through Saiten, Niederhofen, and Leuten. At the fork to Leuten, turn right and ride below the federal highway B12 until you pass underneath it. Keep right again and before Rohr, head towards Helen. It goes straight for a good stretch, then uphill to Helen, where the beer garden of the “Zum Waldhäusle” inn invites you to your first short break.
Ignore all turnoffs and continue uphill towards Hellengerst, where you have a great panoramic view of the Allgäu mountain landscape. After the Hanusel Hof golf hotel, the route descends through Engelwarz and Eisenbolz to Moos. In Moos, turn left onto Buchenberger Straße and ride to Weitnau. Then proceed to Seltmans. There, cycle left towards Oberstaufen. After Sibratshofen, turn left again and follow the bike path to Missen, the workplace of Carl Hirnbein, large farmer, agricultural reformer, and co-founder of the alpine and tourism economy in Allgäu. Several refreshment stops are available on this part of the route to recharge your batteries.
Just after the Missen town sign, turn left at the first intersection towards Börlas/Diepolz. Now follows a fairly steep mountain section with a 12% gradient. Once you reach the alpine cheese dairy and the Allgäu mountain farmers' museum in Diepolz, which is worth a visit, you have completed the steepest part of the tour and can treat yourself to a sample of the delicious Allgäu mountain cheese. Accompanied by a magnificent mountain view, the route descends steeply from Freundpolz – caution: sharp right curve at the end! – with the Niedersonthofen lake in sight.
In Niedersonthofen, turn left at the church onto Sonnenstraße and immediately afterwards onto Am Letten street. After a short steep climb, you pass Wollmuths. In Hupprechts, turn right towards Memhölz. The view of Niedersonthofen lake, the Grünten with its transmission tower, and the Allgäu landscape is unparalleled. Above Memhölz, you reach a crossroads where you follow the white-green bike path signs towards Rohr. In Wies, make a sharp left and pass Unterburg, Judenried, and Rohr in succession.
From there, return the same way you came. Turn left, pass under the B12 again, and follow the rolling route over Wirlings, Albris, and Rothkreuz to Kempten, where you reach the starting point of your tour, the Cambomare leisure pool, via Lindauer Straße and Aybühlweg.
