Great Feininger Tour

You start at the promenade in Bansin. Upon arriving in Heringsdorf, Feininger drew Villa Oppenheim, which is one of the best-known examples of the grand spa architecture in the Kaiserbäder. In the neighboring town of Ahlbeck, there is another bronze plaque on the church, indicating that he also painted this building from 1895. In the Polish part of the island, in Świnoujście, you can continue to walk in Feininger's footsteps. Where vacationers today snap pictures, Feininger then placed an easel to draw the snow-white navigation beacon shaped like a windmill and the town hall. Along the border, the tour takes you to Kamminke. The quaint fishing village with its many thatched-roof houses offers a magnificent view of the Szczecin Lagoon. On the Golm, the island of Usedom's highest elevation, there is a war graves and memorial site. The tour continues to Zirchow. There, the painter was particularly taken by the late Gothic St. James Church. The next place you reach is Korswandt. Here, Feininger experienced rural village life and captured it on paper. Farms and manor houses as well as storages with round-arched windows in Gothen, combined with the name of the place, were processed by Feininger into the abstract oil painting "Gothen." Along expansive fields, the route returns to Heringsdorf.
