    Author’s recommendation

Ootmarsum is a small town with a lively past. This is evidenced by many buildings, gables, and monuments. Ootmarsum received town rights around 1300. Attractions include a magnificent merchant's house from 1656 and a draw well from the 18th century. The Catholic church is the only Westphalian hall church in the Netherlands. In the town hall, a stained glass window commemorates Prince Maurice, who drove the Spaniards out of the city in 1597. Ootmarsum is also popularly called the "Onion Town" because onions were grown and sold at the market in earlier years.

    Roadbook

Your route starts at the windmill in Veldhausen. Through the village, it goes via quiet streets through the Vechte valley up to the border with the Netherlands. You pass a border experience station and reach the border path, which you follow to the border slide (see route 6). Now you are already in the Netherlands. On low-traffic roads, you cycle up to the Nordhorn-Almelo canal, which you follow westward. At the "Schuivenhuisje", an old pump house, the Dinkel flows under the canal. Then it goes on to Ootmarsum, the well-known artist town. In addition to the open-air museum "Los Hoes", numerous galleries and cafés invite you to linger and browse. In Ootmarsum, you get back on your bike and explore the nature reserve "Het Springendal" with its extensive beech forests and heathlands. Soon you are back in Germany. Through the Dinkel valley, the path leads to Lage, which offers many highlights. These include the castle ruins, the manor house Lage with the tenant houses on the Oak Alley, and the water mill directly behind the picturesque village. On quiet paths, you cycle to Neuenhaus, cross the Dinkel again with the hand-operated ferry, and drive past the old town hall, the TOP, and the mill pond through the Vechte valley back to Veldhausen.
