Coevorden is the oldest city in the province of Drenthe and owes its name to a "voorde" in the moor. It was founded as early as 1148. Many impressive buildings bear witness to the exciting history.
Outstanding is the centuries-old castle, which was besieged several times. There are also cozy street terraces and sights such as the "Musketkogelhuis", which houses the historical museum "Drenthes Veste".

Roadbook
You start in Emlichheim: Through the village it goes down to the Vechte and via Echteler almost car-free through the Vecht valley towards Laar. Something special awaits you on your way: Use the crank ferry (April to October) to cross the Vechte, with which you can power yourself along with your bike across the water from your own border experience station "Leaning Tower" at the Coevorden-Piccardie Canal. Past the windmill and through the little village of Laar, you continue cycling into the Netherlands. The path leads over the De Haandrik lock and then on to Coevorden, where many cafés and lovely shops invite you to linger and shop. Upon arriving at the petting farm Arends, which you absolutely should visit, you are back in the Grafschaft. Be excited for a border experience! At the border experience station of the activity park, you climb a lookout tower on the German side above the canal. Once at the top, you are already back over Dutch territory. After this experience, it goes back to Emlichheim along idyllic canal sections on low-traffic paths.
