The varied route leads from the Pöllauer Tal to Stubenbergsee and along vineyards above the lake back again – passing many GenussCard excursion destinations and opportunities to stop for refreshments.

This route owes its name to the GenussCard, whose included excursion destinations can be found in large numbers along the route. But the route itself is a pleasure, too! It starts in Pöllau, passes St. Stefan and the Schielleitner ponds, reaches the Stubenbergsee and Schloss Herberstein. The feature of this route is the “Zeil” with its wine taverns above Stubenberg. The ascent can be confidently described as “challenging,” but the sensational view over the lake and, after crossing the mountain ridge, out into the Pöllauer Tal, compensates for all efforts.

This route includes not fewer than twelve “GenussCard” excursion destinations: In Pöllau, you can enjoy the finest gingerbread, freshly pressed oils, or tasty liver cheese, swim at Stubenbergsee, play minigolf, and stand-up paddle, as well as taste wine, whisky, or beer along the way. Highlights are the castle and castle park in Pöllau, the animal park and castle Herberstein, and of course Stubenbergsee.

Except for about 500m of well-maintained forest passage, this route runs along paved paths and can be easily ridden with normal trekking bikes.

    Author’s recommendation

The GenussCard offers free entry to over 240 excursion destinations during your stay, including arrival and departure days, from March to October.

    Roadbook

Start: Hauptplatz Pöllau/Entrance to the castle    Start: Stubenbergsee/Hotel Haus am See

    Marking: R57/Pöllauer Radweg, HB18/Saifentalradweg, HB8/Hofkirchentour, R8/Feistritztalradweg, HB2/Teichtour, HB9/Schöneggtour,

    • We join the R57/Pöllauer Radweg and cycle towards Stubenberg/Pöllauberg.
    • We continue along Lamberggasse and pass Konditorei Ebner.
    • Through Freiberg and Safental, we ride to Schönaudorf. At the roundabout, we continue straight towards “St. Stefan/Hofkirchen” and switch to the HB18/Saifentalradweg or the garden route.
    • At the St. Stefan church, we turn right towards Hofkirchen, now following the HB8/Hofkirchentour.
    • In Neuhof, we turn left downwards and continue on HB8 to the junction ascending to Ballonhotel Thaller.
    • We pass Ballonhotel and the chapel of Hofkirchen, then turn right at the next intersection heading towards Vockenberg.
    • At Hofkirchen, we cross the state road and continue on the cycling path towards Schielleiten; the baroque castle is visible ahead.
    • However, the cycling path bypasses the castle, but we pass the wild romantic pond facilities of Schielleiten, somewhat hidden on our right. A detour inside is worthwhile.
    • At the next intersection by a wayside chapel, we turn right downhill towards St. Johann/Herberstein.
    • We descend now with a view of the Kulm to the state road and cross it.
    • We now switch to the R8/Feistritztalradweg; the path leads over the parking lot of Tierwelt Herberstein and then right along the cycling path to Stubenbergsee.

Those who want to avoid the climb to the “Zeil” can turn back here and return the same way.

    • Stubenbergsee is the ideal place for a break before continuing along the lakeshore up to the “Haus am See” = Stubenbergsee entry point
    • We now ascend right on the HB2/Teichtour, crossing the state road again and riding on the footpath up to the lake to the intersection.
    • We turn left and ride through the village of Stubenberg to the intersection with the Rabenwald state road.
    • Only a short section on the state road, then we turn right upwards towards “Vockenberg.”
    • The steepest part of the route (Sauriegelweg!) leads us up to the “Zeil,” past buschenschänken (wine taverns) with great views over the lake.
    • At the next intersection, we leave HB2, turn left, and continue on the HB9/Schöneggtour.
    • At the top near GH Stelzer-Lex, we stay right and continue more leisurely until we reach the mountain ridge.
    • Straight ahead now, with views over the Pöllauer Tal, we follow HB9 down via Schönegg to Schönaudorf.
    • There we turn left uphill onto the R57/Pöllauer Radweg and ride back on R57 to Pöllau.
