On the Danube Cycle Path, it takes eight days to travel from the city of three rivers, Passau, to the Austrian capital, Vienna, for which we should allow an additional day. Along the way, we will encounter plenty of cultural and geological highlights.

This stage takes us through a particularly beautiful river landscape to Melk. Here we come across Melk Abbey, whose west facade shines especially in the late afternoon in a very warm light and makes a wonderful photo motif. The majestic building has a history of over 1000 years and plenty of precious relics, splendid marble halls, shining facades, and much more that can be explored during a visit. Melk was one of Austria's most important cultural and intellectual centers and in the 15th century the trigger of the Melk Reform, one of the most significant medieval reforms. The route continues through one of Austria's oldest cultural landscapes, the Wachau. The Danube stretch between Melk and Krems was not designated a UNESCO World Heritage site without reason. In the inns and restaurants along the way, it is obvious that the area is dominated by a certain fruit found everywhere on the menus: the apricot. Prepared as compote, with dumplings or sorbet, or as jam – local chefs have come up with many ways to serve the sweet fruit at any time of day.

On the Erlauftal federal road, we leave the town of Ybbs, crossing the Ybbs river and immediately turn left to reach the cycle path along the Danube bank. On the stairs path, we cycle through small settlements between the river and the railway line to Säusenstein. In the village 'Am Rechen,' we cross the Erlauf river and shortly after turn half-right at the Pöchlarn pond towards the Nibelung monument. From Pöchlarn, we head along the Danube Cycle Path towards the Melk power station, which we cycle around counterclockwise on a wide area. After a while, we reach the garden pub Donaublick. Here we turn right, cross the small lift bridge, and arrive at Melk's old town, which together with the Benedictine Abbey is one of the highlights of our Danube route. Later, we cross the bridge on the country road leading to Emmersdorf and cycle along the main Danube federal road to Grimsing. There, a narrower path leads us through orchards back to the Danube. Continuing, we keep left on a parallel road to the federal highway through 'Aggsbach Markt.' Before Willendorf in the Wachau, we turn left into 'Groisbach' street, which runs parallel to the railway tracks. From Schallenbach, the path goes through further narrow sections between the forest slope and the Danube into the wine-growing towns of Willendorf and Schwallenberg, until we finally reach Spitz.
