From Mitterkirchen to Ybbs (Danube Cycle Path)
Selected alternatives for you
On the Danube Cycle Path, the route takes eight days from the Three Rivers City Passau to the Austrian capital Vienna, for which we should allow an additional day. Along the way, we can expect plenty of cultural and geological highlights.

First, the route goes through beautiful fruit-growing areas. In Eichendorf, traces of the devastating flood of 2002 can be seen everywhere: many houses are brown-colored on the lower half because they were underwater up to the first floor – and that, although the Danube is about three kilometers away here. The route continues through the Mitterhaufen and Hollerauer floodplains, which are flooded repeatedly as sedimentation areas. In Dornach, there is a beautiful lake where we can take a swimming break before continuing to Grein. There, the Historic City Theatre awaits us. It was built in 1791 and is the oldest theatre in Austria. During a tour, curiosities such as locked seats that were only opened to the privileged theatre-goers at that time are shown. On the opposite side of the Danube, the route continues towards Ybbs with its pretty old town. There is also a nice bicycle museum there, already announced by a large bicycle monument at the promenade. With 70 bicycle "vintage" models, 200 years of bicycle history are exhibited.

From Mitterkirchen in the Machland, we turn onto the main road towards Mettensdorf, then continue to Pitzing. Before reaching Eizendorf, a road branches off to the right towards the Danube. We come across a bathing lake and turn left at its tip, then turn right onto the next field path and reach the cycle path at the Danube bank. We arrive in Dornach and decide to take the cycle path between the Danube and the railway line towards Grein. In Grein, we can take a break in a nice café and then visit the old town and especially the Historic City Theatre. Afterwards, we head back to the bridge in front of the town. We cross the bridge ("Greiner Bundesstraße"), turn left onto the side street on the other side, and continue along the Danube through partly very densely wooded areas to Willersbach. Shortly afterwards, we reach Donaudorf. Here, at the height of the picnic area, we leave the Danube bank and head towards the Ybbs-Persenbeug power plant. We cycle along the large dam road, which later becomes Bahnhofstraße, to Ybbs. A visit to the bicycle museum and a stroll through the old town make the perfect end to today's stage.
