The Danube Cycle Route takes us in eight days from the three-floor city of Passau to the Austrian capital Vienna, for which we should take an extra day. On the way, we can expect plenty of cultural and geological highlights.

On the third day we set off from Linz. We ride behind the city first through the Pleschinger Au, the absolute recreational sports paradise of the people of Linz. Here you can cycle, jog, stroll, meet inline skaters and volleyball players and see the plumes of smoke from the family barbecues. A little further on, on our left, we can take a detour to Steyregg and visit the old castle and the museum of local history. We then pass the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial, which we can visit. More than 20,000 people were imprisoned here between 1938 and 1945, more than half of them lost their lives there. On a guided tour or on your own, you can visit the still preserved buildings and facilities, the death climb and the Wiener Graben quarry. At our third stage destination in Mitterkirchen, we can end the day with a visit to the prehistoric open-air museum. Here we see numerous original finds from the Hallstatt period (ca. 800 – 475 BC) and can get a good idea of how people lived and worked in this early period in a reconstructed Stone Age village.

We start at the Nibelungenbrücke and turn left onto the road „Untere Donaulände“, which takes us to the large motorway bridge. We can cross the bridge on the cycle path and cycle on the other side directly into the Pleschinger Au, a popular excursion destination for the people of Linz. We pass the Pleschinger See lake on the left and cycle along the shore until Abwinden is signposted in a northerly direction. Here we turn left, pass a bridge and a country road and shortly afterwards turn right. Straight ahead we pass through Abwinden and continue in the direction of St. Georgen an der Gusen. Behind the railway station in St. Georgen, the route runs parallel to the tracks for a short time, then we cross them and cycle along the Bahnhofstrasse through the town. The path describes a gentle right-hand bend and we then keep to the left to reach the large Mauthausener Strasse (country road). Follow this road through Gusen, Langenstein and Wiesengraben. Before we reach Brünngraben, it is worth making a detour to the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial site. The motorway running parallel to us describes a left-hand bend, while we continue straight ahead. Then we take the second road („Albern“) and turn left inland. We meet the country road and follow it to the right, ride over a small bridge and turn directly right on the other side of the river to get back to the riverside cycle path. Pedalling straight ahead, we pass a camping site on the left and then go around a small harbour. Later the path goes straight ahead for quite a while with a view of the Danube. Finally we reach the Danube power station Wallsee-Mitterkirchen. Shortly before we turn left to cycle around the power station. Afterwards, however, we do not go back to the bank, but in the direction of Mitterkirchen. The path first runs along the edge of the forest, then we cross a narrow branch of the Danube, cycle parallel to the bank for a while and finally turn left into the street „Mitterkirchen“ to visit the prehistoric open-air museum.
