The Fassbodentour 1 is a circular route southeast of Bad Bergzabern. The almost continuously asphalted or concrete-paved cycle path, excellently signposted with a Fassboden symbol no. 1, initially leads through the vineyards near Bad Bergzabern into the "Viehstrich" near Steinfeld and Kapsweyer and from there into the Bienwald to the German-French border. The return route goes via Schweighofen and along the Wine Route back to the spa town of Bad Bergzabern.

Along the way, there are several short climbs to overcome, which then offer very beautiful panoramic views over the gently rolling landscape and as far as the Black Forest. Worth seeing on the circular route is the Steinfeld Westwall path, which offers insights into the history of the region. Steinfeld was heavily affected by more than 100 Westwall installations, bunkers, tank trenches, and pillbox lines from the Westwall construction, which was accelerated from 1938 according to Hitler's instructions.

Currently, the signposted cycle path between Bad Bergzabern and the junction to Dörrenbach is closed until 2026 due to construction work for the Bad Bergzabern bypass. The detour is via Weißenburger Straße, Beethovenstraße, and farm roads to Heyhof. (May 2021)

    Safety information

e.g., between Lisbon and Porto the infrastructure is not yet well developed. The stages from one accommodation to the next can therefore be long and adventurous.

    Roadbook

The starting point of the circular route is Ludwigsplatz in Bad Bergzabern, which you can easily reach from the train station via the pedestrian zone. From here, follow the route markings of Fassbodentouren 1 and 2. Via Schlitt, Petronella, and Friedrich-Ebert streets, you leave the spa town and reach the high trail above the town on the outskirts. On the asphalted service road, you then cycle about 7 km eastwards up to the height of Dierbach. Here you turn right, following the Fassboden symbol no. 1, and ride through the villages of Dierbach and Niederotterbach to Steinfeld. Along the railway line past Steinfeld station, you reach Kapsweyer after another 2 km. In Kapsweyer, turn left towards Bienwald. On an unpaved service road, you first go 2 km south until you meet the Pamina cycle path, where you turn right towards Schweighofen. In the village, turn right onto the main street and after 400 m turn left towards the vineyards. On this section, you cycle through the vineyard landscape past the small settlements of Haftelhof and Heidenbrunnerhof until shortly before Oberotterbach. The last part then leads you directly along the edge of the Haardt on the German Wine Route cycle path back to your starting point in Bad Bergzabern.
