The 26 km circular route leads from Mannheim's Karlstern via the “Lange Allee”, past the wildlife park, to the shooting range (former firing range) and from there via Panzerstraße to the Glockenbuckel of Viernheim. The “Glockenbuckel” is part of a wind-blown sand dune belt of the Rhine plains, stretching from North Baden to Griesheim, and was used as a tank training area until 1994. The tank use ensured that large dune sand areas were kept free of trees there.

From the Glockenbuckel, the route then goes through the former bunker complex and then via Rabenauschneise, Lampertheimer Straße, Sellschneise and Ludwig-Schnell-Schneise to the former ammunition depot RASP 951 (which included 76 earth-covered ammunition storage buildings). From there the circular route leads via the Baurschneise towards Hüttenfeld and via Grenzweg and Wedekindschneise, past a former shooting range to the L 3110. Along the L 3110 you come to another former shooting range and via Seeweg and Schaftrieb to the Viernheimer Heide, which was used by the US forces in the 1990s as a “Training Area”. Today, this species-rich heathland is a popular hiking area. The starting point is reached via Lampertheimer Straße, Alte Mannheimer Poststraße and Neue Poststraße.

The large forest area between Mannheim-Käfertal, Viernheim and Lampertheim is popularly called Panzerwald. The name for the forest area came from its decades-long military use as a training area. Since 2013, the formerly 21 km² military area in Käfertaler Wald and Viernheimer Heide has been cleared and left to nature. Anyone exploring the forest area today encounters numerous relics from that time: abandoned bunkers, former shooting training facilities, etc.

    Roadbook

The starting point of the route is at Karlstern. From the starting point, go first along Lange Allee to the waterworks. Here turn left and at the next fork turn slightly right. When the paved path ends, turn right and ride to the next left turn. Here, the former shooting range is on the right. Turning left, follow Panzerstraße to Glockenbuckel, the former tank training area.

At the crossroads on Glockenbuckel, turn left and then right. When the paved route begins, turn right and at the next left paved path turn left. Passing several former bunkers, at the end of the path turn right to the next left, where you leave the bunker area heading northeast. You meet Lampertheimer Straße (a gravel forest path!), into which you turn left. After passing under the motorway, turn right onto Sellschneise along the motorway interchange to the next right turn that crosses the motorway.

Here turn right, cross the motorway and after 200 m turn right at the 2nd junction. You are now in the former ammunition depot. Cycle to the next junction, turn left there and at the 4th junction turn left again. You ride along Baurschneise (cycle path to Lorsch) to the forest edge near Hüttenfeld.

Turning left leads you on Grenzweg to a junction 800 m after crossing the motorway. Here turn right (trail marker: blue circle) and at the next fork turn half-left. Passing a former shooting range, you reach the L 3110. On the road-adjacent cycle path, head towards Lampertheim (left) to the forest parking lot.

Here turn left towards the parking lot and immediately after turn right onto Seeweg. After 200 m there is another former shooting range. Stay on the wide forest path to Viernheimer Heide.

There turn left onto Lampertheimer Straße and pass through Viernheimer Heide to Alte Mannheimer Poststraße (info board), where you turn right to return to the starting point.
