Oglio Po
A scenic route through northern Italy that connects Martignana di Po, Casalmaggiore, Sabbioneta (a Renaissance gem built by the Gonzaga family), Rivarolo del Re, and Viadana, following the banks of the Po River and country trails through towns of historical significance.
From the majestic embankments of the Po River, which mark the boundaries of the Parco della Golena, a picturesque bike path winds through the heart of the region between the Oglio and Po rivers. Cycling alongside the river, the route begins in the town of Martignana di Po, whose history is inextricably linked to the great waterway that has shaped the surrounding landscape. Following the bike path along the main embankment, you’ll glide effortlessly to Casalmaggiore, an important hub for cycling tourism that offers rest stops and refreshments before you can admire the Torrione, the village’s ancient gate. From here, the trail continues past the Santuario della Fontana and the Santuario della B.V. di Vigoreto, with shaded stretches that are ideal on hot days. The cycling route then reaches Sabbioneta, a Renaissance gem of the Gonzaga family, where you can leave your bikes for a walking tour. Back in the saddle, a well-maintained dirt road—also suitable for touring bikes—starts near the cemetery and leads to Rivarolo del Re, where cyclists can choose to detour toward Spineda along the bike path on the towpath of the Delmona Canal, or head back toward Casalmaggiore and Martignana di Po, passing through the hamlet of Vigoreto on secondary roads with light traffic. From Casalmaggiore, cycling along the main levee, the route concludes upon reaching Viadana.
Author’s recommendation
The route can be completed as a loop by continuing west toward Villanova and then rejoining the route at Casalmaggiore via State Road SP 88.
Alternatively, you can take the quiet country roads that pass through the hamlets of Cappella and Motta San Fermo.
