Always straight ahead along the Dortmund-Ems Canal out of Meppen – and following the course of the Ems in wide bends back into Meppen.
On this route you enjoy the attractive water landscapes north of the “capital” of the Emsland. This includes not least the Geeste storage basin, which is also a popular water sports and recreational lake as well as a species-rich biotope.
Along the banks you will also find numerous good reasons to stop. For example, the parish church of St. Nicholas and Coppenrath’s Knusperl shop right next to the school bakery in Groß Hesepe. Or the farmhouse garden in Rühle, which is cultivated by 16 tenants for their own needs. Guests can also find a nibbling garden plot here where they can taste the typical fruits of an Emsland farmhouse garden.
Back in Meppen there are numerous opportunities to round off the day. Perhaps with a stop at the wonderfully beautiful historic market square, with a city stroll and a visit to the grammar school or the provost church of St. Vitus, or with a visit to the Emsland Archaeological Museum or the city history exhibition in the Arenbergische Rentei.
However, before returning to Meppen, the detour from the route is worthwhile: to the Emsland Moor Museum in Groß Hesepe with its fabulous exhibition on nature and the historical settlement of the moor.
