Helmstedt - Elz - Buschhaus - Eitzsee - Carp Ponds - Lappwaldsee - Helmstedt
A special feature and unique in Germany is the history of the brown coal opencast mines of the former Brunswick coal mines.
The ride through the renatured opencast mines Treue (with Eitzsee and carp ponds) and Helmstedt (with the Lappwaldsee) impressively show how this landscape shaped by coal mining has developed. A region in transition, open for tourism.

The starting point of the route is in Helmstedt on the Holzberg. From the information board at the town hall, you cross the Holzberg. Via Lindenplatz and Südertor you reach the first stop, the Zonengrenzmuseum.
The museum shows the history of the former inner-German border in five sections using the example of the Helmstedt district. Changing special exhibitions complete the offer for visitors.
The route continues through Helmstedt to reach the Elz via the Elzweg. The railway line is crossed, parallel to the B244 you pass through the Elz and then keep left a little later to reach the opencast mine edge.
The memorial stone here commemorates the village of Runstedt, whose inhabitants were relocated between 1950 and 1960 because the village had to give way to the opencast mine.
The tour continues parallel to the B244 to Buschhaus. Before the power station, keep left and then you have an impressive view of the emerging Eitzsee at the edge of the opencast mine in the former Helmstedt opencast mine.
The former opencast mine area is further passed through and you reach a suitable place for a picnic. The rest area at the carp ponds is so idyllic that it invites you to linger.
Freshly strengthened, the two short climbs on the way to the Lappwaldsee are now mastered to then enjoy the view of the Lappwaldsee at the Petersberg. Information boards provide information here about the formation history of the lake in the former Helmstedt opencast mine.
The way back is now basically just a stone's throw. Via the Galgenbreite you reach Beendorfer Str., past the St. Ludgerie monastery, up to the Zonengrenzmuseum. Via the Südertor you then reach the starting point of the route again.
