The 30 km long Eckbach Mill Route mostly follows this hiking trail and takes a small detour up to the Haardt with a wonderful view of the Rhine plain and the Leiningerland.
The Eckbach is a 39 km left tributary of the Rhine. It rises near Carlsberg in the northern Palatinate Forest and flows into the Rhine near Worms. Nestled between forest and vineyards, more than 30 mills once operated in the romantic Eckbach Valley. Due to industrialization, a great mill decline began towards the end of the 19th century. Today, many of the abandoned mills have been lovingly restored. Between Kleinkarlbach and Dirmstein alone, there are still 20 partially very beautifully restored historic mills. Between Altleiningen and Dirmstein runs the 23 km long, well-signposted Eckbach Mill Hiking Trail. It is paved between Kleinkarlbach and Großkarlbach and between Laumersheim and Dirmstein, and is also designated as a cycle path.
