CDT Destination Gers
The Baïse river flows gently through Gascony, from the Pyrenees towards the Garonne. It shapes fertile valleys and gentle hills where the vines that will become Armagnacs, Flocs, Côtes de Gascogne, or Buzets flourish.
The cycle route running along the Baïse valley connects to the EuroVelo 3 (Scandibérique), then to the Canal des Deux Mers. It starts in Barbaste, in Lot-et-Garonne, at the foot of the Moulin des Tours and the Roman bridge where it meets the old Ténarèze road.
The route crosses history on the lands of the young Henri of Navarre, future King Henry IV.
Passing through Nérac, discover its "Renaissance" castle, its bridges and old tanneries. Ride in the footsteps of Queen Margot in the Royal Park of La Garenne. Along quiet country lanes, you will follow the Baïse to Moncrabeau, the "Goat's Hill", overlooking the valley.
Before leaving Albret, be sure to explore the alleyways full of surprises in this village famous for its liars’ festival.
The old railway line, now the Armagnac Greenway, will take you to the episcopal city of Condom, in the heart of the Gers, land of d’Artagnan.
You are now at the heart of the Grand Site Occitanie "Armagnac Abbey Cities". In Condom, discover its Gothic cathedral, spacious cloister, mansions, gourmet shops, wine cellars and many events: a concentration of Gascon culture awaits you!
Continue to the heights of Cassaigne and its castle, which houses a rare 16th-century kitchen, topped with a vault in a cul-de-four shape.
On the way, stop at the double lock of Graziac, a major structure with remarkable architecture, and discover the skill of the lock keepers, where, from April to October, the double lock allows boats to overcome a water level difference of 4.40 meters.
Follow the Wood of the Monks to reach the plateau, close to the Flarembel chapel, nestled between castle and secretive Armagnac vineyards.
Another stopover is a must at the Cistercian Abbey of Flaran, one of the best preserved in Southwestern France. Its cloister, gardens but especially its exhibitions, including the exceptional Simonow collection (masterpieces from the 16th to the 20th century by Cézanne, Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, Monet, Dalí...), make it an unmissable site!
From there, you ride along the old towpath, on "the Baïse trail" connecting the abbey to the port of Valence-sur-Baïse, the last stage of the developed route to date.
Take the opportunity to stroll through the heart of this bastide, perched on its rocky spur, accessed through the fortified Hérisson gate.
