Route overview
Communicate without borders, not only as in the years from 1832 to 1849 using optical telegraphy between Berlin and Koblenz, but also again without fences and privacy walls after the border opening in 1989. This route takes you along the path of the former optical telegraphy from Magdeburg (Station No. 14) to Veltheim (Station No. 20). The return route runs partly along the Iron Curtain Trail and shows various border monuments in the region.

The second day of the route first takes you to Schloss Hessen and then to Veltheim at Station No. 20 before you cycle a stretch along the Iron Curtain Trail. At Mattierzoll you reach the border monument with the border tower, and at Jerxheim station a memorial stone commemorates the border opening.
The short detour to Heeseberg with its observation tower opens up a wide view of the former border area, and in the northeast you can already see Schöningen, the next stage destination.
The historic old town with castle, history fountain, water maiden, local history museum, and town hall will impress you, and the SCHLAFSCHÖN Hotel warmly welcomes cyclists.

The third stage leads you past the Schöningen Research Museum (paläon) and the opencast mining information point to the Hötensleben border monument and further to the border hiking trail in Offleben. Via Reinsdorf, Hohnsleben, and Sommersdorf and past the memorial column "Escape Point Wirbke" you reach Harbke. In the castle park you can admire the castle ruins, the orangery, and one of the oldest ginkgo trees. Afterwards, you reach the Marienborn German Division Memorial. You should allow enough time for the exhibition and site visit.
The route then continues eastwards along the Braunschweig - Magdeburg town twinning cycle path. In Marienborn, the historic town center with St. Marien, the orangery, and the Marien chapel are integrated into the route. Afterwards, you ride through the Aller valley and shortly afterwards reach Ummendorf with its castle and the Börde museum.
On the further way to Magdeburg, you cross the Weser - Elbe watershed on a hill behind Ovelgünne and return along the Schrote to the starting point of the route at the Old Town Hall in Magdeburg.
