Churches on the Eder cycle path
Fourteen churches around the Edersee and along the Eder cycle path invite you to a special and innovative exploration with barrier-free information systems.
The first church cycle route in the Protestant Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck has connected since May 2018 fourteen churches of the Eder church district over a total distance of about 110 km. It runs once around the Edersee and then along the Eder river eastwards from the dam to Mandern. By equipping the churches with a multimedia, barrier-free info system, visitors can immerse themselves in the history of the church and the respective place, listen to devotions and music pieces, solve puzzles or get tips for the onward journey. “Churches on the Eder cycle path” is the first multimedia-equipped cycle path in Europe.
We wish all those on the way great experiences, much joy exploring the churches, and a good ride with wonderful views of the beautiful nature.
The Protestant churches Affoldern, Anraff, Basdorf, Bergheim, Bringhausen, Giflitz, Kirchlotheim, Mandern, Nieder-Werbe, Scheid, Vöhl, Waldeck, Wega, and Wellen look forward to welcoming you.

Multimedia info system
With the multimedia information system - consisting of a terminal tablet in a housing with a loudspeaker system - a connecting element is created in these churches.
In a modern and up-to-date way, visitors receive various information and suggestions. By touching the screen, texts, images, audio messages (e.g., organ music) and videos are presented.
The innovation of this project is raising awareness for the church treasures in the region. It is not about producing new things, but about highlighting the “well-known” with a new, modern medium (tablet information system) and making it interesting and (newly) accessible to a wider public.

Safety information
The bike paths/routes partly alternate between paved, gravel, and/or field/forest paths. Very rarely also on little-used roads. The bike paths/routes can be combined as you like (also with the ferries and the ship) and are signposted in both directions. There are also occasional combined bike and pedestrian paths.

Roadbook
The cycling route begins and ends at the parking lot at Affolderner Lake. There are plenty of free parking spaces available here. Of course, you can also start the cycling route from any point along the way.
The cycling route covers about 110 km, making a full loop including all 14 churches. The route circles the Edersee completely and follows a distinctive section of the Eder cycle path. The main route is marked in blue. On the access and return routes, the color changes to magenta leading to the respective church. Due to the occasional access and return routes, some sections are ridden twice. Overall, this only affects a small part of the cycling route, ensuring that the landscape around the Edersee, besides the churches, offers plenty of variety.
The route can be explored with an e-bike in 1-2 days/stages. With a touring bike, 3-4 stages are recommended. Overnight accommodation is available for example in Vöhl, Asel, Nieder-Werbe, Waldeck, Hemfurth, Bringhausen, Harbshausen, and other places.
Interesting variations or shortcuts arise through the inclusion of the ferries* in Asel / Asel-South, Scheid / Rehbach, or also by boat*. Anyone who finds the climb to Waldeck too strenuous can comfortably take the Waldecker mountain railway* including the bike up to Waldeck Castle and church; a downhill ride from the opposite direction is also possible.
*Season dependent.
