Canals and railway paths
The southern loop follows the Gredl railway path to Greding and is very nicely prepared, also with old railway signs.
The local railway "Gredl", first put into operation in 1887, served as passenger and freight transport. Steam locomotives transported the trains from Roth to Greding. It still ran on the entire route until the 1970s. Gradually, rail operations were discontinued.

The northern loop follows the Main-Danube Canal to Neuses, the Schwarzach to the Ludwig Canal, before leading on a railway path from Unterferrieden to Allershausen. Rothsee is then just a few steps away.
The Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal (also called Ludwig Canal or regionally "Old Canal") was a 172.4 km long waterway between the Danube at Kelheim and the Main at Bamberg in the 19th and 20th centuries. More broadly, the canal built between 1836 and 1846 was part of a navigable connection between the North Sea at Rotterdam and the Black Sea at Constanța.
Author’s recommendation
The accommodation "Johanns Hotel" (https://johanns-hotel.de) is very new, very stylish, with great breakfast and a large, lockable bike cellar next to the underground garage.
The beer garden of the Gasthof Gutmann zur Post (http://www.hotelschwarzesross.de/gastwirtschaft.html) has a great location on the town wall, endless sun, a large menu, and friendly service. Highly recommended (as of June 2020)
The beer garden "Brückkanal" at the Ludwig Canal Bridge (https://brueckkanal.com) is very nice
On the southern loop, there is hardly anything to stop for after Greding!
A trip to Roth is also worthwhile, the old town is very nice, with a castle (Ratibor)

Roadbook
A few notes for the route:
Km 12.1 European watershed
Km 29 Greding: very nice medieval town with city wall. Note: after Greding there are almost no places to stop for food or drink. The campsite restaurant at Kauerlacher Weiher is only open at lunchtime on Sundays and holidays.
Km 48.6 We meet the Main-Danube Canal
Km 81.7 Crossing over the Schwarzach
Km 87.5 North of Wendelstein the route meets the very beautiful and romantic Ludwig Canal
Km 93.2 Nice beer garden "Waldschänke Brückkanal" (www.brueckkanal.com), which goes back to the times when the lock keepers had the right to sell food and drinks to the boatmen.
Km 93.2 includes a 2.4 km long loop on foot through the Schwarzach Gorge. Not the Grand Canyon ;o), but quite nice. The Ludwig Canal bridge over the Schwarzach is very impressive from below; on the northwest side you can climb down (surefootedness required!) and wade through the Schwarzach.
Km 117.6 A rest at the marketplace is offered at Eiscafé Azzuro
Km 122 At the recreational area Rothsee (www.strandhaus-birkach.de) you shouldn’t forget your swimwear!
