A short and easy cycling route for the whole family just by the border with Italy. Along the way, we will pass cultural landmarks that testify to life along the strictly guarded border between former Eastern and Western Europe.
The route starts in the center of Solkan at Jože Srebrnič Square. From there, we head towards Nova Gorica. At the roundabout, take the first exit and at the next larger intersection, follow signs for Gorizia in Italy. Before the border crossing, turn left. Soon we arrive at the railway station, the oldest building in Nova Gorica, in front of which is the European Square, where you can stand with one foot in Slovenia and the other in Italy. At the following intersection, we cross the road and turn right onto the cycling path that leads us along the border all the way to Šempeter pri Gorici. There, we join the road and follow it until the underpass below the highway. At the next intersection, we join the cycling path on the right side of the road. We cycle through fields up to the military watchtower, which houses the smallest museum in Slovenia, presenting life along the border with Italy. From the museum, we continue on the cycling path heading south. When we reach the main road, we turn left and at the roundabout, take the first exit. We follow the main road to the intersection where signs direct us towards Nova Gorica. We will pass by the largest compact vineyard in Slovenia, Biljenski griči, which extends over 250 hectares. The route takes us through the village of Vrtojba to the town of Šempeter pri Gorici, where we again join the cycling path along the border to Nova Gorica. Upon arriving in Nova Gorica, turn right and ride through the town center, where you can take a break with some ice cream or a drink.
