A hilly, scenically wonderful bike route in the north of Upper Austria, where the car should stay at home.

We cycle from the terminus of the Mühlkreisbahn through the hilly Mühlviertel always southwards to the Danube, crossing the Eferding Basin before reaching Wels Main Station over a wooded ridge.

    Author’s recommendation

A stop at the Danube simply belongs to it. Of course, the route can also be done in the opposite direction. However, then it is much more exhausting.

    Safety information

An easy bike ride, but quite hilly and requires a certain amount of fitness and strength.

    Roadbook

It is basically impossible to write down every turn of an 80 km long route. The route mostly follows various cycling routes (e.g. R26 Mühltal Cycle Path, Granitland Cycle Path, etc.) or low-traffic secondary roads. The route is as follows: Aigen-Schlägl Station - Aigen-Schlägl town centre - Natschlag - Weichsberg - Perwolfing - Führling - Rohrbach - Lanzerstorf - Wolkersberg - Sprinzenstein - Hühnergeschrei - Haselbach - Altenfelden - Neufelden - Bridge over the Große Mühl - Kleinzell - Steining - Grub - Sankt Martin im Mühlkreis - descent to the Danube and over the bridge to Aschach an der Donau - briefly along the Danube to Brandstatt - Eferding - Raffelding - Staudach - Landgasthaus Reif - uphill on a wooded ridge - descent to Mistelbach - Niederhocherenz - Mitterlaab - Stadlhof - Herz Jesu Church Wels - Wels Main Station.

    Public transport

    Public-transport-friendly

The Mühlkreisbahn runs from Linz-Urfahr Station across the Rohrbach district every 2 hours to Aigen-Schlägl. To get to Linz-Urfahr Station, you can use your bike from Linz Main Station (travel time: approx. 10 minutes). Unfortunately, there is no train connection between the two stations (possibly tram).

Wels Main Station (end point) is easily accessible from all directions by ÖBB and Westbahn (most Railjets also stop in Wels).

Example (June 2023): Departure S2 from Wels Main Station at 8:37 am, arrival at Linz Main Station at 9:00 am.

By bike through the city to Linz-Urfahr Station.

Departure Linz-Urfahr Station (R3180) at 9:30 am, arrival at Aigen-Schlägl Station at 10:58 am.

    Directions

A description of the approach is omitted because this is a "Rail & Bike" route and the car can stay at home.

    Parking

    Directly at the station possible.
