The route starts in Donaueschingen and leads over the Baar high plateau with great panoramic views to the southernmost part of the RadParadies up to the Swiss border. Through the Southern Black Forest Nature Park, it goes via Hüfingen with its inviting old town back to Donaueschingen.
Pfohren is the first village on the young Danube. Pfohren's landmark is the Entenburg, an old hunting and water castle built in 1471 by Count Heinrich von Fürstenberg. Since 1986, the Entenburg has been privately owned. It then underwent a fundamental monument-appropriate renovation.
The town of Fürstenberg, the ancestral seat of the Princes of Fürstenberg since the 13th century, was originally located on the Fürstenberg. When the village was destroyed by a large fire in 1841, the inhabitants rebuilt the new Fürstenberg at the foot of the mountain. The scenic location of Fürstenberg allows a view over the entire Baar. At the summit of the Fürstenberg stands the Kardinal-Bea-Chapel. The chapel, built in the style of a typical Baar house, was constructed on the site of the former castle and is meant to recall the peasant houses of the old village of Fürstenberg. On the northwest side of the Fürstenberg is the Geographical Teaching Trail, which conveys the connections between geography and soil formation. The Fürstenberg is also a popular destination for many hang gliders.
In Blumberg-Zollhaus, a steam train ride on the museum railway to Weizen is a must. Over four viaducts and through six tunnels, one of which is Germany's only spiral tunnel, the former strategic railway line, today a museum railway, winds its way. Lovingly called "Sauschwänzlebahn" in the local dialect due to its winding route, it covers 25 km at a leisurely pace through the Kommental, over the Wutach Gorge and the Mühlbach valley. The railway museum and the signal box at Blumberg-Zollhaus station guide visitors through its history and show many nostalgic relics from the steam railway era (running days not daily, please request timetable).
On the section from Fützen to Achdorf, the route runs parallel to the Wutach and crosses the "Schluchtensteig". The Schluchtensteig is a quality hiking trail that, on its route from the Wutach to the Wehra, features gorges and ravines, waterfalls and lakes, raised bogs, flower meadows and pastures, bright green primeval forests and dark fir forests. It is not a pure valley path—quite the opposite. Rocky outcrops and mountain peaks are regularly reached. Again and again, views open up to the gorges just passed or those ahead www.schluchtensteig.de
In Hausen vor Wald, immediately next to the former castle, is the Church of St. Peter and Paul. A widow from the Schellenberger family had it built from 1747 to 1749. The externally inconspicuous village church surprises inside with a rich baroque interior.
The town of Hüfingen is well known for its historic, listed old town and the Roman bath ruins. But the school museum and the city museum for art and history are also worth seeing. An extraordinary testimony of Roman bathing culture is the Roman bath ruin. At the place of today's Hüfingen, the "Brigobannis" fort was established with a developed road network, an adjacent civilian settlement and a bathhouse for soldiers. The fort bath of Brigobannis, built around 70 AD, was one of the earliest of its kind north of the Alps. Even today you can learn about the history of the Romans and their bathing customs in the Roman bath ruins in Hüfingen. The school museum offers insight into the school history of the last 100 years. Visitors have the opportunity to sit in an old school bench, write on slate boards, practice old scripts, or just marvel at all the books, wall paintings and writing utensils from past times. The city museum for art and history displays works from the Biedermeier artist circle of the 18th and 19th centuries. More detailed information about all sights at www.huefingen.de
