The B55 Berghäuser cycle route is a roughly 41.5 km long circular route in southern Burgenland, which starts and ends in Unterwart. The route is characterized by numerous small climbs that add up to over 600 meters of elevation gain. These efforts are rewarded with splendid panoramic views of the Strem and Pinkatal valleys.
The term "Berghäuser" in southern Burgenland refers to higher-lying parts of a municipality. Accordingly, the route leads through wooded areas with varying ascents and descents.
The route starts at the municipal office in Unterwart and passes through several villages, including Rotenturm an der Pinka, Jabing, Rohrbach an der Teich, Neuberg/Bergen, Oberdorf, Olbendorf, and Litzelsdorf, before returning to Unterwart.
Author’s recommendation
A cultural highlight along the route is Rotenturm Castle, built in a Romanesque-Oriental style with bright decorative elements on a red-plastered base. It was constructed under the direction of the architect Johann Lang (1822–1900).
