The flat to gently rolling circular route leads through the renowned wine villages of Deutschkreutz, Neckenmarkt, Horitschon, and Raiding. Along the way, expansive vineyards dominate the landscape, where the region's deep clay soils allow the famous Blaufränkisch grape to flourish. At the numerous wineries along the cycle path, you can sample the fine wines directly from the winemaker. Cozy wine taverns and shady beer gardens invite you to a culinary break or a refreshing drink.

This route also has much to offer culturally! Worth seeing are the Carl Goldmark Museum in Deutschkreutz, the Wine and Flag-Throwing Museum in the old town hall in Neckenmarkt with its small but exquisite wine shop in the vaulted cellar below, as well as Franz Liszt's birthplace and the Liszt Trail in Raiding. Those who love magnificent views should take a short detour to the popular Donatus Chapel, nestled amidst the vineyards of Neckenmarkt. The extra elevation gain through the vineyards is definitely worth it. You can reach the "Blaufränkischblick" viewing platform in Horitschon without any additional incline, which offers a beautiful panoramic view.

Thanks to excellent signage and paved paths, the B40 is perfect for a relaxed day trip with a trekking bike or e-bike.

    Author’s recommendation

Anyone who loves Sterz, the "soul food" of Burgenland, or would like to try it, should definitely stop by the "Gasthof zur Traube" in Neckenmarkt.

Note: At the "Bienendorf" (Bee Village) in Deutschkreutz, the route used to involve carrying bicycles up a staircase with 20 steps. A new path has since been built, allowing cyclists to easily bypass the steps.

    Safety information

As many cycle paths are farm tracks, agricultural traffic is to be expected. Mutual consideration ensures that these paths remain pleasant to use for everyone.

In Austria, cycle helmets are compulsory for children up to the age of 12. Safety waistcoats are not compulsory at dusk, in the dark or in poor visibility, but are certainly an advantage. Click here for the Austrian bicycle regulations.
