Start/Finish: Main Station in Kaiserslautern
The Eselsbach is an approximately 13 km long tributary of the Lauter north of Kaiserslautern. It originates west of Enkenbach and flows into the Lauter northwest of Kaiserslautern at the Dammühle. The valley of the Eselsbach is called "Hagelgrund" in its middle, most romantic part. It is a popular hiking area with beautiful hiking trails along the forested steep slopes of the Eselsbach valley.
Route description at:
The starting point of the circular route is at the main station in Kaiserslautern. First, you cycle along Bahnhofsstraße to Eisenbahnstraße, where you turn left. At the second intersection, turn right into Augustastraße and at its end turn left onto Barbarossaring. Via Stahl- and Bismarckstraße, you reach Messeplatz. From here, follow the signposted cycle path to Hochspeyer. After the roadside bike path along Entenweilerstraße ends, cycle on the country road towards Johanniskreuz until just before the railway underpass. Here you leave the road and ride on the paved cycle path, passing Beilstein Castle ruins up to Federal Road 37. On the slightly ascending bike path beside the federal road, cycle about 1 km towards Hochspeyer to the highest point of this section.
Here, cross the road and go left, following the bike path signs to Enkenbach. The forest path only ascends gently for about 300 m. After another 300 m, the bike path is paved. You cross the highway and then have a fantastic view of Donnersberg and the northern Palatinate Forest. In Enkenbach, you meet Barbarossaweg on the main road. You now cycle through the Eselsbach valley on it until the Eselsbach flows into the Lauter at the Dammühle. The Lauter cycle route leads you into Kaiserslautern city center. Via Eisenbahnstraße, you reach Kaiserslautern main station again.
