The route starts at Zipprothplatz in Marktredwitz and leads via Pechbrunn, Wiesau, Friedenfels, Reuth bei Erbendorf, Krummennaab, Erbendorf, Trevesen, Pullenreuth and Waldershof back to Marktredwitz. The majority of the Steinwald Nature Park is circled. The route is designed as a day trip and was ridden by me as such. However, those who want to take the time for sightseeing can also do it as a two-day tour.

Unlike the Steinwald cycle path, which leaves the Großer Teichlberg to the left (or right, depending on the direction of travel), this route circles the entire Steinwald massif including the Großer Teichlberg. This avoids riding on the busy state road 2170 between Waldershof and Wiesau.

Marktredwitz was chosen as the starting point of the tour, as it is a railway hub easily accessible from all directions. Those coming by train from Regensburg could also start at Reuth bei Erbendorf, Wiesau or Pechbrunn.

The route is designed as a day tour. If you start around 8:30 a.m. in Marktredwitz, you will be back around 5:00 p.m., provided the ride goes without incident. However, more than about an hour lunch break and some short photo stops are hardly possible. Probatum est. Those who prefer a more relaxed trip should plan an overnight stay.

This tour is not suitable for beginners and untrained people as it hardly contains any flat sections. Aborting and taking a short route back to Marktredwitz is only possible in Wiesau and Friedenfels, but the Steinwald massif lies in between, which first means long and steep climbs.

    Author’s recommendation

The signage, especially from Marktredwitz station to Zipprothplatz and in Pechbrunn in the area of Bahnhofstraße/underpass, can be called decidedly unsuccessful. In Wiesau, the numerous cycle paths might pose a problem. To avoid constantly handling a large and unwieldy map, I copied excerpts with the cycle paths from BayernAtlas using the Snipping tool during the tour preparation (in the area of Zipprothplatz and Bahnhofstraße Pechbrunn aerial photos) and transferred them to several DIN A4 sheets. These can be conveniently folded to DIN A5 size and put in a plastic sleeve. The method may seem old-fashioned, but I don't appreciate GPS devices (or navigation systems), because a map always works – if you can read it.

    Roadbook

From Zipprothplatz on the southern route of the Wallenstein cycle path through Hohe Gasse, a hollow way with old cellars on both sides, steeply uphill to Dörflas and from there moderately ascending to Manzenberg. Here there is a view mainly to the south and southwest over the eastern parts of the Steinwald. Short descent to Lengenfeld, with a view of Großer Teichlberg (685 m). At the northern edge of Lengenfeld, turn left and follow the Leuchtenberg route via Groschlattengrün to the junction of Bahnhofstraße in Pechbrunn.

Attention! The signage in the area of Bahnhofstraße is not very successful and the entrance to the underpass under the railway is easy to overlook.

After passing under the railway line, follow Mitterteicher Straße out of town and follow the Wallenstein cycle path until shortly before Oberteich.

Southeast of Pechbrunn, the route runs for about one kilometre on the remains of the old highway from Marktredwitz to Mitterteich, later Reichsstraße 15. About 900 m south of Pechbrunn, an old milestone is still preserved.

Shortly before Oberteich, turn right onto an asphalted road and after about 250 m turn right onto the municipal connecting road towards Triebendorf (Egergraben cycle path) and continue to Wiesau. Shortly after Triebendorf, climb (about ten percent) to Wiesauer Kreuzberg.

Worth seeing in Wiesau: Pilgrimage church "Holy Cross", parish church St. Michael, historic guesthouse "Zum Weissen Ross" with brewery and butcher's shop at the church square.

Leave Wiesau on the local cycle path via Friedenfelser Straße and continue via Scheibenhof to Kornthan.

The 14-hectare Kornthaner Weiher has been privately owned since the beginning of the 17th century and is still managed today by four fishing families.

At the Kornthan fire station turn left and then continue on the Steinwald cycle path to Muckenthal. Passing Voithenthan, the lonely Haferdeck mill and Haferdeckfelsen (natural monument) to the Friedenfels district Unterneumühle. Through the valley of the Heinbach to the forest tavern "Forsthaus Zainhammer". Here, the Steinwald cycle path crosses the Heinbach and runs until shortly before Reuth bei Erbendorf on the track of an old narrow-gauge railway. In the Reuth district Drahthammer, after a short steep climb, do not follow the Steinwald cycle path to the right, but continue straight ahead via Hammerweg up to the castle and castle brewery.

Worth seeing in Reuth bei Erbendorf: Reuth Castle (private property, not publicly accessible), church St. Katharina

At the castle brewery turn right onto the Fichtelnaab cycle path. At the foot of the steep castle hill, the Steinwald cycle path merges from the right and both paths run past the Reuth bei Erbendorf train station on a former railway track via Krummennaab to Erbendorf. Through the eastern outskirts of the former mining town of Erbendorf, it goes through the valley of the Fichtelnaab to Trevesen. From there on the Euregio-Egrensis cycle path to Lochau. At the fork in the middle of the village, turn right. At the edge of the village, the Steinwald cycle path merges from the left. Continue on this to Mengersreuth and Pullenreuth.

In the old fire station of Mengersreuth, cyclists' meeting point with information stand and toilets. In front of the cyclists' meeting point a kind of Kneipp facility (if the Höllbach has enough water).

In Pullenreuth, first about ten percent steeply uphill on the Steinwald cycle path to Kirchstraße. Where the Steinwald cycle path turns left towards Rehbühl, continue straight on towards Arnoldsreuth. After about 350 m, turn left towards Funkenau and Tannenhäusl. From Tannenhäusl again on the Steinwald cycle path via Zottenweis and Rothenfurt to Waldershof.

Worth seeing: community brewery (directly on the Steinwald cycle path), Waldershof Castle at the western end of the main street called "Markt", parish church St. Sebastian.

Via Mitterteicher Straße and the Rosenhammer district to the heavily trafficked state road 2121. Cross this and return to the starting point via local cycle paths through Pfaffenreuth, Wuttigmühle and Dörflas.
