A simple circular ride from the Rhine to the first foothills of the Rheinhessen hills, mostly flat along former railway lines and along the Rhine.
Fancy a light circular ride on the tracks of "Amiche" and "Valtinche"? Through historic wine villages and along the world-famous wine site "Roter Hang" one can cycle quite relaxed on the former narrow gauge railway tracks, except for some small but steep climbs in the first half of the route. Along with beautiful views of the large Rhine River and numerous seasonal wine taverns and wine gastronomy inviting you to a refreshing wine break. After all, some of the best Riesling wines in Germany are grown here.

Roadbook
The circular route lovingly named 'Amiche' is named after the railway that once ran from Alzey to Bodenheim, and by the way, it was just one of many branch lines that were given nicknames. Between Undenheim and Nierstein, the 'Valentinchen' used to run. Today the tracks have long been dismantled and parts of the routes have been converted into cycle paths. In Bodenheim, the route starts from the station along Rheinstraße into the older part of town and then over a hill on the old 'Mommenheimer Weg' to Harxheim. Here begins the first railway section for 6.1 km on the low railway embankment through the flat landscape. Along the way, the eastern outskirts of Mommenheim pass by, and the route rises very gently but noticeably towards Selzen. Still following the old railway line through Selzen, the path then has to divert to cycle and farm roads that are just as comfortable to ride on because the track between Hahnheim, Köngernheim, and Friesenheim is no longer usable. From Friesenheim via Dexheim to the outskirts of Nierstein follows the second railway section of 7.5 km length. For the remaining 12 km back to the starting point in Bodenheim, the Rhine Cycle Route and the Rhine Terrace Route are used, combined with a representative crossing of the old town center of Nierstein.
Requirement:
The 'Amiche' is suitable for all occasional cyclists who are also used to longer distances. The traffic-free route allows safe, enjoyable gliding. Caution is advised at the six road crossings and especially to and from the Rhine Cycle Route in Nierstein.
Route Character:
- 25 km on forest and farm roads, of which 14 km on old railway lines
- 8 km on urban roads without cycle paths
- No cycling on rural roads
Surface Quality:
- Entirely on asphalt and concrete roads
