AM-SB-ME variant for Ybbs valley warm-up route
With AM, SB and ME begin the vehicle registration numbers of the Amstetten, Scheibbs and Melk districts.
We travel through the tri-border area of these districts on this route and hope not to encounter too many cars.
The outbound ride to Stetten is hilly, the return through the Ybbs valley is flat.

For Ferschnitz and Freidegg we find in Memory of the Country

the title image and following text:
Embedded in the gentle hills of the Mostviertel lies the market town of Ferschnitz.
Since 976 the bishops of Regensburg had estates here.
First mentioned in a document from 1034 the area was called "Phezniza", derived from the Slavic word for "raging, wild".
The name was therefore based on the brook and its sometimes turbulent behavior.
The place probably emerged only in the 12th century, possibly at the same time as Freydegg castle, which lies northwest of Ferschnitz on the road to St. Georgen am Ybbsfeld.
It was also a fiefdom of the Regensburg archbishopric.
From 1345 comes a purchase agreement, in which Friedrich der Haeusler sold the fief to the church at "Versnitz", the court near the church and other properties to Pilgrim von Tannberg.
Some years later, the owner of Freydegg, Heinrich von Zelking, acquired the church fief.
A donation to the church followed in 1352.
Since then, the development of the village remained closely linked to the Freydegg lordship.
Through marriage, Freydegg came into sole possession of the Streun family in 1452.
From 1569 Reichard Streun von Schwarzenau, Hofkammerpräsident under Maximilian II and leader of the protestant estates, owned the manor and the castle.
He expanded the castle between 1575 and 1594 into one of the most magnificent renaissance castles of the country.
At the wedding with his second wife Regina von Tschernembel in the castle on April 24, 1581, a serious accident occurred:
The hall with the wedding guests collapsed; there were dead and injured.
The castle changed owners in the 17th century until finally passing to the Starhemberg family in 1678.
It remained in their ownership until 1937.
Decay began already in the 18th century.
Today only the gate tower of the forecourt and a long economic wing remain of the building.
Thanks to the intercession of Reichard Streun von Schwarzenau the town received market rights, which were granted together with the market coat of arms in 1589.
The Lower Austrian peasant uprising of 1596-97 also affected Ferschnitz.
On March 1, 1597, the rebellious peasants—subjects from Neuhofen, Euratsfeld and the parish of Ferschnitz—attacked the rectory, plundered it, and threatened to hang the pastor, who had fled to Freydegg castle.
The protestant cleric had railed against the peasants in his sermons and declared them unworthy of the holy sacrament and that their children should not be baptized.
