Starting in Rothenburg ob. der Tauber, the Altmühltal Cycle Path leads via Colmberg, Leutershausen, and Herrieden to the Altmühlsee and further through the Altmühl Valley, finally ending in Kehlheim.
The first section runs through the Upper Altmühl Valley from Rothenburg o.d.T. to the Altmühlsee. Along the way, it passes through the Frankenhöhe Nature Park and from the source near Hornau follows the course of the Altmühl, which flows through charming towns and smaller villages, surrounded by gentle landscapes. Culinary-wise, the cozy inns and beer gardens offer a variety of Franconian specialties that provide cyclists with energy after a long ride.
After climbing to the Frankenhöhe, the route continues first along a beautiful forest path. You then reach the Hornauer Weiher, considered the source of the Altmühl. From here, the path leads via Colmberg, Leutershausen, and Herrieden always following the Altmühl.
The entire route is well signposted.
The distance from Rothenburg to the Altmühlsee is 75 km. From the Altmühlsee to Kehlheim it is another 166 km.
