The route first takes us along the Danube to the mouth of the Gaißa into the Danube. Then it goes through the beautiful Gaißa Valley landscape protection area and off the traffic towards Tiefenbach. We only touch Tiefenbach on our tour or circle it to the north. About 100 meters of elevation have to be overcome in this section - but all manageable. The highest point is reached at the B 85, which we can safely cross in the Unterkaining area (underpass). The route leads us further along the heights - with wonderful views towards the Bavarian Forest - over Jacking and Patriching to the Rennweg. Here there is the possibility to make a detour to the Veste Oberhaus or to roll directly down to beautiful Passau via the Neue Rieser Straße. You should not miss the unique view of Passau.

    Have fun trying it out.

On the Danube Cycle Path, we first ride upstream along the Danube (towards Vilshofen). Initially along Regensburger Straße, but then off traffic via Steinbachmühlweg to the Kachlet power plant. There we change to the other side of the Danube. Via Maierhof and Wörth, the Danube Cycle Path takes us to Zieglstadl, where the Gaißa flows into the Danube. This is a good place for a first stop to go briefly down to the bank of the Gaißa or to the mouth of the Gaißa into the Danube.

We now follow the signposting "Danube-Bavarian Forest Route" (turn right). After about 500 m we leave the moderately busy main road and follow the small side road to the Gaißamühle (breakfast guesthouse). From the Gaißamühle a well-maintained forest path leads us along the Gaißa through the Gaißa Valley landscape protection area. Especially in spring, there are always beautiful views of the Gaißa here.

After the Gaißa Valley, we climb some elevation (about 100 m) in the Tiefenbach area. But it is worth it. We pass through the nice small village of Götzing and new views open up to us.

We only touch Tiefenbach on our tour or circle it to the north.

The highest point is reached at the B 85, which we can safely cross in the Unterkaining area (underpass). Here, a visit to the new main building of the organic bakery Wagner at Zugsberg is recommended. A great selection - even in Corona times. There is, among other things, homemade ice cream - of course all organic.

The route continues along the heights - with wonderful views towards the Bavarian Forest - via Jacking and Patriching to the Rennweg. From Neureut, we can use the new pedestrian and cycle path, whose section Pramöd - Neureut was opened only at the end of 2019. The still missing 3rd section from Neureut to Patriching is expected to begin construction in 2021 and be completed in 2022. Then the connection Rennweg (Veste Oberhaus) - Patriching will be continuously equipped with a pedestrian and cycle path.

At the Ries / Rennweg junction, there is the possibility to make a detour to the Veste Oberhaus or to roll directly down the Neue Rieser Straße back into beautiful Passau. You should not miss enjoying the unique view of Passau in the so-called Schönblick curve.

Over the Schanzl Bridge, it goes back into Passau.

    Roadbook

From the town hall, we take the Danube Cycle Path upstream toward Vilshofen. In Zieglstadl, at the mouth of the Gaißa into the Danube (km 9), we leave the Danube Cycle Path and follow the signposting "Danube-Bavarian Forest Route". At the end of the Gaißa Valley, we come to a small side road (Grubmühlenweg) into which we turn right. After about 100 m, we come to a crossroads where we do not follow the "Danube-Bavarian Forest Route" but turn left! After about 400 m we turn right to Götzing - here a few meters of elevation have to be overcome. At the end of Götzing, we take the right turn. The small road takes us to Tiefenbach. There we turn left (Bayerwaldstraße) and take the signposted pedestrian and cycle path up to Gotting. Here we are again on the "Danube-Bavarian Forest Route", which we continue to follow. After the underpass under the B 85, we leave the "Danube-Bavarian Forest Route" again and turn right, coming directly to the new main store of the organic bakery Wagner at Zugsberg. The Anwandweg leads us parallel to the B 85 further to Jacking (Gasthof Knott) and from there it goes along the former B 85 via Patriching and the Ries to Rennweg (Andorfer Weissbier Brewery, turnoff to the Veste Oberhaus). The Neue Rieser Straße now leads us back down to the center of Passau.
