The Aartal cycle path opens up a dreamy valley nestled in the gently rolling Hintertaunus - lots of nature as well as numerous cultural monuments and mineral springs to discover.
The Aartal cycle path is about 55 km long and leads from Diez via Bad Schwalbach to Taunusstein-Bleidenstadt. With the first section to Hahnstätten, you have a nice “flatland route” that you can easily manage even with small children. Hahnstätten is a nice destination - with the church, former schoolhouse, and some historic houses there is surprisingly much to see, and there is no shortage of various places to eat. From Hahnstätten to Aarbergen-Michelbach it continues mostly flat. From there to the exit Laufenselden (before Hohenstein) you cycle about six kilometers along the federal highway (B 54). From Laufenselden, the cycle path climbs steeply over Hohenstein Castle. Then the route passes through the spa town of Bad Schwalbach and becomes flatter towards Taunusstein. The last section of the cycle path leads to the UNESCO World Heritage Limes, which is best experienced at the Zugmantel fort near Taunusstein-Orlen.
Author’s recommendation
For a “small” or “large” rest, there are many places to eat directly on the cycle path.

Roadbook
The Rhineland-Palatinate section from Diez to Aarbergen-Michelbach runs along flat paths and is very family-friendly:
- Completely on paved paths and quiet local streets. No use of classified roads. Route often directly next to the disused track of the Aartalbahn with the feel of a rail trail. (The intact railway track is partly used for draisine rides and from Wiesbaden to Hohenstein there is seasonal museum railway traffic.)
The Hessian section from Aarbergen-Michelbach to Taunusstein-Orlen definitely requires athletic effort as it goes from the Aartal valley up to the Taunus heights:
- From Michelbach, the cycle path is interrupted for 4.1 km. Here, the only option is to use the heavily trafficked B 54.
- Around Hohenstein, significant elevation must be conquered with steep climbs (from 230 to 400 m altitude).
- Also further on, there are repeatedly shorter, steep climbs.
- The surfaces are partly paved, partly gravel-bound.
The Aartal cycle path connects the Lahn valley with the southwestern Taunus.
