Exceptionally scenic cycling route. Especially in the area of the upper Iller, i.e. from Oberstdorf to Krugzell. Here you temporarily leave the Iller and go via Altusried and Maria Steinbach through the green Allgäu landscape to Illerbeuren. From here the Iller cycle path accompanies the Iller or the Iller canal to Ulm.
Except in Kempten, you do not go directly through a city. If the route is ridden in several sections, you can make detours to the villages and towns on the left and right of the Iller (e.g., Sonthofen, Immenstadt, Kempten, Illerbeuren, Bad Grönenbach, Memmingen, Illertissen, Buxheim, etc.).
Note: Except in Kempten, there is no gastronomy directly on the Iller cycle path.
Author’s recommendation
- Travel by train to Oberstdorf
- Overnight at Explorer Hotel about 700 m from the Iller source
- The section along the upper Iller is a "must have"
- Stop at Weidach / Eich on the Iller, also go straight through Kempten and do not be misled by the Altusried signpost.
- After Krugzell via Bergs to Altusried (not as I rode on forest path and trail to Winkels).
- From Altusried via Knaus to Staubers.
- From Kardorf to Ferthofen take the road. (not as I did, here along the Iller is only a narrow hiking trail and in Ferthofen you have to go up stairs to the bridge).
- At Heimertingen an unmarked detour due to construction work on the Iller.
- The route is also possible as a stage tour.

The Iller cycle path runs mainly (I estimate 80%) on gravel, sometimes more pleasant and sometimes less. The shaking is not for everyone. Only on the section from Krugzell to Illerbeuren is there also asphalt, i.e., roads and foot / cycle paths.
In the area of the upper Iller (up to Kempten), the Iller meanders through the green landscape. Here, the cycling route is really fun. The cycle path here almost always runs directly along the Iller.
Between Krugzell and Illerbeuren, the cycle path leaves the Iller. Here is a landscape and nature conservation area that should be respected.
From Aitrach / Memmingen, the Iller has been straightened. The cycle path then runs both on the left and right along the Iller through shaded tracks along the riverbank vegetation to Ulm. Along the route, there are also some bathing opportunities, e.g., Kellmünzer quarry lake, Filzinger lakes, northern and southern forest lake, Auseen, etc.

I rode the route with a city bike (e-bike, Kalkoff Endeavour 3).
At the end of the route even the toughest backside is well shaken up.
