One of probably the best freeride runs in the Pitztal: long, steep, and only for truly skilled riders. Every year the "Pitztal Wildface" competition also takes place on this route.

The descent directly from Mittagskogel can also be called the "crowning glory of all Pitztal lines." Like the already described "Mittagsscharte" descent, this run is also an option to return to the valley without using the lift. However, both skiing skills and equipment and experience must be adequate. The run is very steep especially in the upper part, and a fall at the wrong time can have unpleasant consequences. Moreover, due to the north-facing aspect of this freeride line, the avalanche risk must always be considered. But precisely because of the northern orientation, you can still find fresh powder here even when many other places only have deep slush left.

    Safety information

Complete safety equipment (shovel, probe, avalanche transceiver, possibly airbag backpack) is absolutely mandatory. Only possible under safe conditions. People unfamiliar with the area should hire a mountain guide.

The best way is also to take the Brunnkogel drag lift up here and then return down the slope that runs to the left when viewed from above. Right after a narrow section of the slope (approximately at the height of lift support 9) you leave it to the left (northwest direction) towards Mittagskogel (that is the mountain through which the glacier subway runs). Often there is also a track pulled by the piste machine here. You should try to lose as little altitude as possible when traversing along the slope. Below you can see the valley station of the Brunnkogel drag lift as well as the "Practice lift Mittagskogel." After about 500 meters it's time to shoulder your skis (or alternatively put on skins) and the ascent begins.

At the summit of Mittagskogel there is a summit cross, so the goal is hardly to be missed. Especially with a lot of snow or if there is no beaten track yet, an ascent with skins is recommended here. Once at the top, it is now time to strap on the skis.

From the summit, go initially east into a gully, then northeast or north downhill. At an altitude of about 2,900 meters, keep to the left and cross a small ridge. Continue north, partly slightly northwest. Now you have a good view over the entire "main gully," which becomes broader downhill. This gem offers perfect opportunities for really nice and fast turns, but you should always watch out for snow-covered rocks.

At an altitude of about 2,500 meters you reach a plateau scattered with numerous large boulders (BC freestylers will certainly enjoy here). Here you keep right again in a northeast direction and traverse almost flat along the slope until you see the valley station of the glacier railway (or the access road and parking lot) and are virtually right above the tunnel railway. From here you go back to the valley station of the Pitzexpress over rolling terrain, finally also through dwarf pines.
