The "Mittagsscharte" variant is certainly one of the most rewarding freeride runs in the Pitztal. With only a little ascent, you reach a very extensive terrain that offers almost countless variants and should still have untracked snow even a long time after the last snowfall. In addition, the run is a variant to get from the Pitztal glacier to the valley without using the glacier subway (there is officially no valley run at the Pitztal glacier). Due to the northwest orientation, the powder here also lasts comparatively long.

But caution: the terrain is quite demanding and secure conditions are necessary to do this run. In addition, the ascent is quite strenuous especially with new snow when no track has been laid yet.

    Safety information

Complete safety equipment absolutely necessary (avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe). Never ride alone, as the terrain is quite remote. Stable conditions are also absolutely necessary, especially in the upper part in the gullies (especially in the middle directly below and to the left of the Mittagsscharte) where drifted snow often lies. But the lower part also has numerous steep sections that definitely have the potential for avalanches. The description and map representation presented here are only recommendations and must be adapted to the conditions present on site.

The best way is to take the Brunnkogel drag lift up and then take the slope back down, which runs to the left when viewed from above. Right after a narrow section of the slope (approximately at the height of lift support 9), you leave it on the left (northwest direction) towards Mittagskogel (that's the mountain through which the glacier subway runs). Often there is also a track pulled by a piste machine here. You should try to lose as little altitude as possible when crossing along the slope. Below you can see the valley station of the Brunnkogel drag lift as well as the "Mittagskogel practice lift".

After about 500 meters it is time to shoulder your skis (or alternatively put on skins) and the ascent begins. While Mittagskogel towers to the north, it goes steadily uphill in a westerly direction until the so-called "Mittagsscharte". Depending on conditions and existing tracks, the ascent takes about 20-30 minutes. Once you arrive at the Mittagsscharte, it's time to firmly attach your skis to your legs again; now the downhill fun can start.

The descent leads northwest down into the Taschachtal. In the upper section there are numerous steep gullies, with the terrain directly below the Mittagsscharte and left of it being more difficult than the right side. In the middle section you will find wide and open slopes, while the terrain in the lower part becomes increasingly rugged again with steeper and flatter sections alternating. The area is quite extensive, so everyone can basically find their own individual line.

Upon reaching the Taschachtal, you get onto the service road, which comfortably leads northeast back to the valley run of the Rifflseebahn and from there to the valley station of the glacier railway.
