Mountain route to the highest Slovak peak, which like a few peaks in the High Tatras is only allowed with a mountain guide with
a few climbs approximately in grade II range
Author’s recommendation
- Mountain hotel expensive, but with a tourist dormitory (bunk beds)
- From the parking lot at Tatranská Polianka, ascend already the evening before or take the hotel shuttle
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.

No shelter options along the ascent or descent
Secure climbing in grades II to III and no markings on the path. Therefore, the mountain guide is useful not only to secure the climbing sections but also due to the not always easy orientation
Tips and suggestions
Mountain guides were almost fully booked at this time. I booked the guide Ján through the hotel at Mountainproguiding for 220 EUR including equipment (June 2016), as I was alone: mountainproguiding.com
The distant view was not particularly good on this June day, as often in this early summer period (despite the early start from the mountain hotel at 5:15 a.m.). From late summer, the weather in the High Tatras generally stabilizes.
Even though the Alpine Club (AV) membership card does not bring direct advantages in the Tatras, one should take it along if possible because, on such tours there, prior experience may be asked. An Alpine Club card is possibly helpful, or you can mention previously completed more demanding tours.
As a senior over 62 years and EU citizen, you can travel by train for free in Slovakia (see internet e.g., https://www.zssk.sk/). Normally, you have to have a card issued once for this. However, on the Tatra train, an ID card is sufficient (as of 2020).
Roadbook
Ascent on the shorter route, first through a dwarf pine area, then, as usual in the High Tatras, steeply ascending over easy climbing sections (grade II up to easy grade III) and a lot of block climbing to the summit. Descent via the longer route to Batisovské pleso with friction climbing downwards and on a part of the Tatranská magistrála back to the mountain hotel.
Not difficult, but requires high concentration and sure-footedness.
