Selected alternatives for you
This rather rarely frequented hut-to-hut crossing, because it is very long and high alpine, leads over large parts through glaciated terrain.

In addition, a large vertical distance must be covered, so besides alpine experience, very good fitness is also necessary.

    Author’s recommendation

From the Gepatschhaus, it is advisable to return via the Rauhekopfhütte to the Vernagthütte and Vent.

    Roadbook

From the Vernagthütte, follow the clear mountain path northwest, which soon leads along the ridge of a large lateral moraine. After the path crosses under the east flank of the Hintergrasl Spitze, it turns right and crosses the upper catchment of the Vernagtbach to the north. Upon reaching the Große Vernagtferner, follow the usually present track northeastwards up to an altitude of about 3000 m.

Then, from the (usually wider) track, turn left towards the Wildspitze and now walk directly north towards the Taschachjoch. You cross it by climbing about 30 m over rocks onto the Taschachjoch after the glacier and descending briefly over rocks on the other side. Over a moderately crevassed glacier, descend northwest to the Urkundsattel.

Continue westward always along the right edge of the glacier below the southern flank of the Pitztaler Urkund. Then the descent turns north and leads into the broad valley of the Sexergetenbach, which you cross heading north. Here you meet path no. 924, which leads left (west) up to the Ölgrubenjoch.

Finally, cross a dead ice field and reach a steep slope and a rock (trail markings) and then again snow to the cross at the Ölgrubenjoch (3,044 m). On the other side, it goes almost flat over scree or firn, then in a slight northern arc into a scree or snow gully. Follow it south until a cirque. Over this, ascend on the marked trail always heading west to finally increasingly green wide mountain slopes and then descend in switchbacks through the sparse forest to the Gepatschhaus.
