Additionally, the path over Warenkarscharte and Wütenkarsattel is very long but offers truly magnificent views of the surrounding glaciers and peaks over 3000 meters.

    Author’s recommendation

Very experienced and fast hikers can also ascend Windacher Daunkogel from the Warenkarscharte (difficulty up to UIAA II, plus an additional nearly 200 meters of elevation gain).

    Safety information

On the partly crevassed glaciers, roping up is essential. You should inquire about crevasse conditions at the hut.

    Roadbook

From the Hildesheimer Hut, follow trail No. 102 northwards, passing a small mountain lake. The path soon becomes a steep climb and makes a distinctive left turn at a steep step (partly steel cables). It then flattens out again along the lateral moraine of the Gaiskarferner glacier, which is reached at about 3050 m altitude. The glacier then ascends very gently and, thanks to orientation aids, is easily crossed northwest to the glacier restaurant Jochdohle near the Eisjoch.

From there, continue always westward, first descending the Windacher Ferner and then continuing through scree onto the narrow Warenkarferner, which is crossed to the west.

Back on rock and scree, continue on a rather poor mountain path (faded markings) uphill to the Warenkarscharte, where it is definitely advisable to rope up before the Wütenkarferner. From here, descend a bit westwards to about the western ridge of the Warenkarseitenspitze. Then turn northeast and cross the glacier to the Wütenkarsattel. Before reaching it, leave the glacier and ascend over scree and past a mountain lake to the 3103 m high saddle.

This leads to the transition to the Sulztalferner glacier, which is descended gently northwards on its (seen from above) left side (watch out for crevasses).

Approximately where the rock outcrops of the Wilde Leck descend from the left, leave the glacier and continue hiking in the same direction. Keep slightly to the left to follow the prominent lateral moraine. This leads to a terrain step where it briefly becomes steeper descending into the valley floor of the Sulze.

Follow this on an increasingly clear path northwards to the beautifully situated Amberger Hut.
