An original traverse: Tower by tower you climb the Stone Men and work your way up airily to a magnificent viewpoint.

Even on the approach your gaze searches upwards. And you quickly realize: It is not just a row of towers, but a whole jumble of rock formations. Like a lined-up army, they stand on the slope and seem to watch over the lakes of the Salzkammergut.

The start leads over an airy ridge to the second Stone Man. A slender tower with barely room at the summit – even a rope team stands shoulder to shoulder here. After rappelling down you stand at the foot of the next rock figure. The following men also rise steeply, demanding brave grasping and clean climbing.

The change of character is interesting: From the front the towers seem forbidding, from behind some appear surprisingly tame. Over flatter sections you switch to the next start. With the fifth tower you reach the heart of the traverse. There are several variants here; especially worthwhile is the north ridge.

Step by step you work your way higher until you finally stand at a beautiful viewpoint with the Salzkammergut at your feet.

    Author’s recommendation

The upper walls are often skipped on the descent. If you still have strength, you can add more variants here.

    Safety information

The start is difficult to find in the confusing maze of towers and gorges. A good sense of orientation is essential.

    Roadbook

Approach: We start from the parking lot at the Hochlecken lifts going uphill on the ski slope (forest road) for a short distance and then turn onto the marked, flat Valerieweg. After about 25 minutes we branch off southeast (left, cairn) onto a forest path and reach the "Stone Men Gully" (Langgraben). This runs up west (right) of the towers. Sometimes the path disappears, then clear trail marks appear again. In the gully, do not be misled by a crossing trail. First through forest, then over meadows and later through loose scree we ascend to about 1,200 m. Now we traverse east (left) on trail marks to a saddle bounded by rock walls (tree) and then over a second, smaller saddle. Five meters after this is the start of the 2nd Stone Man (1,210 m).

The topo details the climbing route.

Intermediate descents: From the 2nd Stone Man we rappel down 10 meters, then down a gully through a notch (BH) into the scree (III). The 3rd Stone Man can be easily bypassed at the base of the wall (the rope length in grade 8 is optional).

From the 4th Stone Man we cross rocky terrain in about 2 minutes to the start of the 5th Stone Man. Here, entering and exiting the west-running "Stone Men Gully" on a narrow trail is easily possible.

From the 5th Stone Man we initially descend along the ridge and then in a serpentine on a ledge on the west side (right of ridge, downclimb II). Then over rocky terrain in 10 minutes to the start of the 6th Stone Man.

From the 6th Stone Man 20 meters over grassy cushions lead directly to the start of the 7th Stone Man.

Descent: From the 7th Stone Man we continue ascending the exposed ridge (II). Then we follow not the first, but the slightly friendlier following gully west (right) on trail marks down in the scree. Staying in the gully, steep grassy cushions and loose scree alternate. Thus we return to the familiar junction at the start. Further descent is by the already known approach path.

Alternatively, from the exit you can of course also ascend to the Hochleckenhaus (off trail).
