The first ascent of the Schneck east face in 1922 was among the first climbing routes in the upper 6th grade in the Alps at that time. For a long time, it was notorious as a horror route: "Ice pitons due to crumbly rock advantageous" (Ernst Zettler, 1949). Famous alpinists also climbed it, such as Anderl Heckmair (the great first ascender of the Eiger north face) in 1949 as the fifth ascent, and at that time rated it even harder than the Comici route on the north face of the Große Zinne. However, the days of horror stories are over. The route has since been renovated and offers mostly solid rock for Allgäu conditions. The Schneck east face is therefore on the wish list of every Allgäu climber. Signing your name in the historic climbing logbook is a bit of a pride. It is slowly approaching its 1000th ascent.
